Health officials said Saturday that New York had 33 new cases of swine flu, bringing the total confirmed to 366.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Richard Daines said the total outside New York City rose to 126 in 18 counties around the state, with 14 cases in Erie County, three cases in Rockland County, and one each in Westchester, Niagara, Onondaga counties.
New York City had 13 new cases, bringing the total here to 240.

Most cases of H1N1 virus infection have been mild, with symptoms resembling seasonal flu — fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and chills. One death in the state was linked to the virus.

Health officials expect laboratory-confirmed cases to be a fraction of the infections in the state because many people don’t seek care and recover at home.

Seasonal flu causes about 1,000 New York City deaths a year.

I’m scared death reports make people more hysterical than reporting schools closing for precaution. If regular flu deaths occur more often why make the effort to report every swine flu related death.

All this stuff is mass hysteria. If a regular flu outbreak kills 1000 people a year in NY, what is the purpose of building up this story?!

Researchers are afraid that the swine flu may strike like the Spanish flu which began in spring and reappeared in the autumn with great vengeance. There are similarities between swine flu and the 1918 Spanish flu – the most devastating flu in the last 100 years. Both started in late spring. Both viruses seem to target people between the ages of 20 and 40; not the very young and old, as is the case in the typical flu. In both cases, the flu is of the subtype H1N1. By the end of the spring of 1919, the Spanish flu had killed more than 50 million people worldwide. In the United States, 28% of the population got the flu, and 2.5% of those people died. In a typical flu season around 36,000 Americans die. Most flu viruses infect between 5% and 20% of the population, and less than 1% of those cases die. However, with modern medicine, it seems the swine flu would be less potent.

    To #s 4 and 6:
The reason for concern from CDC and Dept. of Health is that this new strain of H1N1 flu has no vaccine (yet). Therefore, the strain of this flu can spread very rapidly with nobody vaccinated against it.The most at risk segments of society are the elderly and children. To say that thousands die from the regular flu each year, why the hysteria? Because it’s thousands out of millions who contract the flu. But, there are millions who are vaccinated each year for the flu. The # of deaths would be quite higher without a vaccine. Baruch Hashem this new strain H1N1 is not as deadly as feared but, could easily mutate and become more deadly. Therefore, taking all neccessary steps to prevent the spread of this flu, i.e. Yeshiva closings, is the right thing to do.
