Monsey, NY - A yeshiva where a cow was slaughtered in the backyard last month agreed today to pay a fine to settle charges that the act violated town regulations.

The town agreed to accept the $5,000 fine to settle the charges against the Bobover Yeshiva in Ramapo Court today.

Town Attorney Michael Klein noted that the fine was the maximum amount that the municipality could levy against the school for conducting an unapproved use on its property.

"We hope that this will serve as a deterrent for anyone considering repeating such appalling conduct," he said.

Neighbors who live near the school, in an upscale area bordering the villages of Wesley Hills and Pomona, were horrified when they looked out their windows the evening of May 4 and saw young men slaughtering the cow with knives, decapitating it and hanging it from a tree.

Parts of the cow, including its head and intestines, were stored in a classroom for young children, according to the Ramapo police, who took pictures of the scene.

The school's director, Rabbi Gershon Bornfreund, later apologized for the incident and said it was the result of a miscommunication between the school and a young man who was studying how to slaughter animals according to Jewish ritual law.

Attorney Kenneth Gribetz, who is representing the Monsey-based congregation, said yeshiva officials were relieved to settle the case.

"The matter is now closed," he said. "They can now concentrate on education."

A perfectly fair settlement. $5000 is not going to break them, but it sends a clear message that this behavior is not acceptable. It is nice to see the town do something reasonable, and nice to see the Bobov community accept their punishment honorably.

Oh yeah? How could they possibly have got off worse? $5K is the maximum fine for this catch-all "offense" (which ought to be void for vagueness).

#1 It didn't violate any laws, but there's this "conducting an unapproved use", which seems to cover *anything* you do on your property that isn't explicitly in your use permit, and that the town chooses to object to.

It was worth $5K to just to get the case closed and out of the press. The longer it hangs around, the worse it looks for the Yeshiva and the rest of the community. They should be pleasd to just let it go -fast!

This story won't go away....the report of the fine is on the local news tonight along with a "background" piece on how the chasidim have antagonized the local communities in suburban new york...thanks again to the bobover rebbe for the gift that keeps on giving.

What's it got to do with the Bobover Rebbe (either one)?

It has nothing to do with a Bobover Rebbe, I guess that comentator belongs to the other Bobov and will therefore spew hatred even if it makes no sense whatsoever, some kids just never grow up.
