The agency fielded 8,000 cases in 2008; this year, it’s up to 10,000, Deputy Labor Commissioner Terri Gerstein said. She was standing in front of a Bushwick Key Food to announce the results of a sweep involving eight supermarkets where baggers worked long hours for tips alone.

Six of the stores agreed to pay some 39 past and present baggers $317,687. The agency estimates the other two owe nearly $400,000.

Penalties can be toothless. The agency can fine employers who retaliate against workers who speak out $200 to $2,000.

A bill under consideration in Albany would increase penalties to $1,000 to $10,000.

Government again always meddling and mixing in to the detriment of the common good. Whatever compensation people are prepared to work for, is a fair wage

Time to crack down on the summer camps who take full ADVANTAGE of our kids by charging them to work for tips!!!!! When will this stupidity end? I have to pay over $2500 for my child to be a JC or waiter so he can come home with $900 in tips??? This is crazy and something should be done. NOW

The Yeshiva’s pay late which is an offence, and its both a federal and state offence.
The rabbeim and moros all get paid late — and some by many months and some don’t get paid at all.
I just heard of a yeshiva that at the end of the school year, wants to start a new slate, and forget about paying the previous year.
Yes the parents and contributors need to pay on time the tuition but that still is no heter for the schools not to pay the rebbeim and moros late.
If the teachers and rabbeim were paid on time don’t you think they would feel better about their jobs and would put a lot more into their jobs and b’simcha!!
Shame on us thaty we allow teachers to be paid later, these people are on the front lines – in chinuch – on our behaf and are entitled to paid punctually.
