Salt Lake City, UT - Federal prosecutors have charged a man with making threats against President Barack Obama after he allegedly told a bank employee he was on a mission to kill the president.

The Salt Lake Tribune of Utah reported that Daniel James Murray allegedly made the remark to a teller at a bank in St. George on May 27 as he withdrew $13,000 from an account.

Murray's whereabouts are unknown. A court affidavit says Murray is from New York and has recently been in California, Utah, Georgia, Oklahoma and possibly Texas.

The U.S. Secret Service says Murray has at least eight registered firearms.

Malcolm Wiley, a spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, said he had no comment Thursday.

I'd be more scared of the 8 firearms than the 3 names.

Don't arrest him, it's not effective. I think the president would rather that the secret service reach out to him & use diplomacy.

I think this episode should serve as a warning to those who have posted here on VIN that is its "ok" or "legal" to express hateful wishes against the president or even say you wish harm would come to him just as long as you don't urge specific action. I believe ANY such rhetoric is wrong and exposes the person to criminal action. The same should apply to the hateful rhetoric some have expressed against arabs over the past few days in some of these columns.

Of course it can. But we are protected by the first amendment. We can say anything we like, so long as we don't make any actual credible threats. "If X would happen then I would do Y" is not a threat. Only "I am going to do Y" is a threat, and only if a reasonable person who heard this would believe that the speaker would really do it.

Boruch Hashem we have a first amendment, and therefore you are wrong. It is perfectly legal to hate the president, to wish him harm, and even to advocate his assassination; it's even legal to say that in some hypothetical situation one would kill him. The only thing that is illegal is a true threat; that is, expressing an actual, *credible* intention to harm him, in the here and now.
