Paris, France - Parkinson's Disease Linked to Pesticides |
|

Dr. Alexis Elbaz of the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research and University Pierre et Marie Curie said the study involved people with the French health insurance organization for agricultural workers who were frequently exposed to pesticides.
The study leader said that by interviewing participants, visiting farms and collecting data on pesticide exposure, occupational health physicians constructed a detailed lifetime exposure history to pesticides.
The study, published in the Annals of Neurology, found that Parkinson's disease patients had been exposed to pesticides through their work more frequently and for a greater number of years/hours than those without Parkinson's disease.
Among the three main classes of pesticides -- insecticides, herbicides, fungicides -- researchers found the largest difference for insecticides: men who had used insecticides had a two-fold increase in the risk of Parkinson's disease.

I knew it! My father has Parkinson's and I am convinced it is linked to rural areas, and pesticides. This confirms my thinking.

The article will be coming out, I suppose, in the next issue.

Reasoning from a sample of 1? Such a link has been suggested many times before, and never has it survived the light of scrutiny. It remains to be seen whether this report will be different.

There is a part of Long Island where cancer rates are the highest in the country. There is a theory it is related to the pesticides used when the land was potato farms many years ago. The theory has been written about many times but never proven as fact.
We all know that our food is full of all kinds of chemicals, from the ones they intentionally mix into the food to the ones they spray on the produce. Who knows what is really safe and what isn't. Who knows what the combination of all these chemicals may be doing to us in the long term. I hope I never really find out.

The article is online. I have downloaded it and will read it tomorrow.
An interesting fact from the abstract is that the strongest association with PD was found for organochlorine pesticides (the most famous of which is DDT).

Hey, Milhouse, if you have the right access you can read the entire article in manuscript format. 35 pages of pdf. I perused it - not worth the time to read the whole thing. But take a look at Table 1 on page 21. They did statistics on smokers, both controls and cases. And guess what? The Odds Ratio (OR) for "ever cigarette smoking" was 0.5 (i.e. half the chance to get Parkinson's if you smoke). For more the 17 pack-year smokers the OR was even lower. So, smoke, smoke, smoke! It's a matter of pikuach nefesh.

Most people don't realize just how toxic our environment is. On the most elemental level-air, water, soil-there are levels and types of toxins that the human body cannot handle. Even the home has toxins we would not imagine in ordinary items such as clothing, carpets, shower curtains, furnishings, building materials and wood flooring. For most of these toxins there are no metabolic pathways in the body break down and eliminate them. They are either constantly recirculated or they are stored in joints and fat. The bioaccumulation of these toxins eventually can lead to disease. Pay attention to small chronic symptoms and get tested. Educate yourself regarding sources of these toxins, what they are, the damage they can cause, and how you can avoid them as much as possible. Learn methods as to how to eliminate them safely and effectively.

That is your inference, not my comment.
My "sample" as you call it would be from all the research, reading and time I've spent speaking to many people with PD.
Many come from rural areas, and have had exposure to pesticides. It is my belief that there is a link.

Of course smoking would protect against Parkinson's Disease. Smokers die before they get old enough to get Parkinson's Disease!

But it is a fact that for smokers the "relative risk" (RR) for getting Parkinson's is approximately 0.40, i.e a reduction by a factor of 2.5 in the chances of getting Parkinson's. Many epidemological studies have been done which confirm this. My problem is that all this research relates to cigarettes, and my thing is Cuban cigars. I hope the results carry over. Got to go, the Montecristo No. 4 is waiting.

What in these pesticides do they believe is causing illness? Is it organic compounds or heavy metals? Heavy metal toxicity is a big problem. Some theories are that parkinsons or alzheimers might be caused by heavy hetals.

Sorry, Millie. I know it's your turn but allow me. Sir. What you believe does not constitute reasoned infference and is of no consequence. If you believe that pesticides are bad for you, by all means grow your own crops. If you believe that the moon is made of green cheese and that the moon landings were staged by NASA, that's fine as long as your beliefs don't interfere with your functioining in society.

Repeat after me: Correlation Does Not Imply Causation. I have also noticed that studies showing correlation between the stuff on the current "bad list" and apparent improvements in health are seldom if ever published, like the more than 30 studies linking moderate alchohol consumption with reduced risk of cardio/vascular disease (Hi Sherree). The media outlets know that this kind of sensational reporting sells newspapers and advertising, and there are an awful lot of know-nothings with not even a modicum of knowledge who'll say "Aha! I knew it!"
