“I’ve waited for a baby for so long, I’m so happy,” a woman who became the proud mother of a firstborn son at the age of 60, said today.

The woman and her husband, an ultra-Orthodox couple living in the central Israel community of Kfar Khabad, were married over 40 years ago, and have been trying to have a child for nearly four decades.

The woman underwent numerous fertility treatments, and eight months ago finally became pregnant, but experienced various complications, which Prof. Moshe Hod, head of the High-Risk Pregnancy Unit at the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva, said were typical of her age.

The woman went into premature labor about three weeks ago. She was hospitalized in an attempt to stop the early delivery, but soon after that doctors had no choice but to deliver the baby, which came into the world in the 34th week of pregnancy and at 4.29lbs.

“The woman is doing absolutely fine,” said Prof. Hod. “She’s in recovery with her son and she’s euphoric. Naturally, she is going to have to be under observation for a while.”

At the age of 60 a woman can no longer conceive a child naturally and the process requires an egg donation. The rest of the process is the same as any other in vitro fertilization and once an embryo has been created and deemed viable, it is transferred into the woman’s uterus.

While technically there is no reason for a healthy woman in her 60s – or even 70s – not to become pregnant, such late pregnancies have sparked an ethical debate within the international medical community, with the two main questions remaining the process’ fairness of the child – who may be orphaned at a young age; and the question of how much can we really interfere with nature.

    Why negatives?

This poor woman and her husband have been trying for 40 years to have a baby. When the doctors’ and with Hashem’s help she is blessed with one…..
and some want to cloud the issue and rain on their parade?

That last paragraph should never have been written. It was clearly done so to turn something beautiful into a negative.

VIN … Can you delete that last paragraph.

And, up above, it also lies. It says that a 60-year old woman can not conceive. That is a bold-faced lie. It would have been accurate to say MOST 60-year-olds will not conceive without help, but there are some who have been blessed with late menopause, and can conceive.

I just get annoyed when reports of beautiful nice things are turned into negative things.

Women of this age should not be having children…..there are thousands of yassomim crying out for families and these people are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars (probably from goverment subsidized health care programs) to have children beyond an age when it is not healthy for women to bear children. How will she be able to care for the children in their teens when she herself is in her 70s.

They say the baby is healthy. Let the new parents have their day or joy! This judging and bashing only further the hate and suffering in this world. I’m a child of a parent of a mature age, and I am a very happy and healthy adult with a family of my own. I am so happy to have been brought into this beautiful world. Thank you Mom and Dad, and of course God.

That’s such wonderful news. If Hashem made modern technology – BH it can be used by frum Yiden too. Over the last years many “miracle” babies have been born. They sure will keep their OLDER parents active and hopefully healthy. Hopefully, they reach a ripe old age. There are no guarantees in life!

Obviously all these insensitive people who are outraged that she should have never had the baby, or that she should of adopted, have never had the nissoin of going through infertility treatment. BH that Hashem helped you have have as many children as you wanted with out the agmas nefesh of thinking you will never hold your own child in your hands. The pain is something that most people BH can not imagine.

Sorry folks, I agree with #17 . I B”H have a large family & I was told I would never have children, so I truly understand how this lady feels. However, at 55 I AM EXHAUSTED!! Yes, she’s on a euphoric high right now, but toilet training, teething, wanting mommy to run & play & get down on the floor to build legos (and then getting up!!)…all these things are very hard on a woman of her age. They were hard on me in my 30’s.

And what happens if, this is a realistic possibility, she is not here by Bar Mitzvah? What happens if Tatteh isn’t here either? What happens to this child then? He’s raised by relatives? Let’s assume the parents raise him to adulthood. How can a couple in their mid-70’s deal with the emotional & physical demands of a teenager? They are 2 generations removed.

Sorry, I think it’s selfish. Yes, they are parents at last & that’s a beautiful thing, but giving birth is one thing. Raising kids is another. Now go ahead & attack me for daring to speak my mind. Who will be first?

“Both mothers were Lamaze. Both mothers are in excellent health. Neither needed any medical assistance to get pregnant or “special” treatment of any kind prior, during or after childbirth.. The 61 year old was her first pregnancy. The 63 year old her 4th pregnancy, and 3rd child.”

Care to provide some proof? If your statement is true, and women over 60 gave birth to healthy children without using donor eggs, there should be many articles on the net about it.

    This surprised me.

“1997: Dawn Brooke of Guernsey gave birth to a son by caesarian section on August 20, 1997, at the age of 59. She became pregnant unexpectedly, initially mistaking the symptoms she experienced for cancer, and is the oldest mother currently known to have conceived naturally. It has been speculated that the hormone replacement therapy which Brooke had may have contributed to her ability to ovulate past menopause”

B’H, and Mazel Tov to these fine & deserving parents. My Tate was 54 when I was born & Mamma was around 39. I was an only child. I am currently 65 and Tate was niftar at 98 & Mamma at 88. I enjoyed every moment of their lives and miss them as much today as when they first passed away. There is something very special growing up with older parents. While I missed some of the things that younger parents do with their children, I benefited from the wisdom, patience and experience that Mamma & Tate had aquired due to being older than most new parents. I am sure that Hashem has blessed these fine people with a very special gift, may they be Blessed with Orichim Yomim so they may pass on their wisdom to their son as well and so they may be Zoche to see his many accomplishments and service to Klal Yisroal & H”KB

What a bunch of bubba meisas.

These kids were either adopted or the children of unwed family members and the older woman cover by claiming the baby is their’s.

You’d be amazed how often it happens.
