Houston, TX - Charges Dropped Against Rabbi Involved In Police Traffic Stop |
|
Rabbi Avishur was arrested [Reported by VIN News] after coming to the aid of an EWS 10th grade student during a traffic stop last Wednesday, June 3. This student, while on her way to her final exam, had just been ticketed by a Houston Police Department officer for allegedly making an illegal turn. Rabbi Avishur was taken by the same officer downtown, where he spent a day and evening in the city jail before being released.
Geoffrey Berg, Rabbi Avishur’s attorney and partner in the firm Berg & Androphy, took on the case pro bono. Berg emphasized that “credit should be given to the District Attorney for doing the right thing. The entire incident was unfortunate, as there was never a crime committed.”
EWS's Head of School Stuart Dow said, “I am delighted the case was dismissed. The system yielded the right result. Rabbi Avishur is looking forward to moving on beyond this incident and spending time with his family this summer without having to worry about the case’s outcome.”
Bobby Lapin, EWS Board of Trustees president, noted the school’s appreciation for the Houston Police Department. Lapin stated, “We are grateful for the role that HPD plays in the safety and security of our community.”

I agree. Overzealous cops. Rookies, idiots . You dont have a person spend a day and a half in jail for no crime. Policemen are mean, petty, over egoed liars who feel threatened by anyone talking back. This policman should be watched for future infractions and the Rabbi should sue for false arrest.

Unfortunately, as America becomes Amerika the police state, we will see more of this. I have known this Rabbi since he was a little boy. He was a mentch then as he is now. The cops blew it - but no one really cares. Time for us to close up the galus camp as the Goldene Medinah proves itself Fool's Gold.

I expected the charges to be dropped. The problem is that most people don't realize how easily they can be arrested for interfering in police business. This seems to be the typical result when the intervention is not of a malicious nature. An arrest, then later the charges are dropped. This is what happened to one of my friends in NY. People should be educated about this though, so that they will avoid getting arrested for being involved in a police matter that doesn't concern them.
"Overzealous cops. Rookies "
No. The problem is that most people aren't educated in such matters. Think of what would happen if people often got involved in police matters that don't concern them. The police department wouldn't be able to function. properly. Stories like this need to be publicized, so that people will be informed about this. Poster # 2, being a police officer is a very difficult job. People need to have more respect for police officers.

If you don't realize by now that the cops are overzealous jerks.. then you are not paying attention to the news.
Did you see the story from NJ last week? The cop almost killed the person for the "crime" of being nuts.
The black guy in NJ as seen on the video did nothing wrong.
Cops in NYC in particular are major attitude problems

This stuff happens to blacks all the time. We as Jews should be zealous advocates of civil rights.

Police are like anyone else who want respect from the people. They have to earn it.
Or as I recently heard an older man explaining to a younger man who had just gotten a promotion but wasn't being treated like the workers used to treat the previous manager:
You cannot demand respect, you have to command respect.
