The hunt will take place on dozens of city properties within five miles of Kennedy and LaGuardia airports.
Aviation officials have culled bird flocks on airport property for years, but this will mark a major expansion of the effort into other parts of the city.
The roundup is being timed with the molting season, when the geese can't fly. It is scheduled to begin within a week. The birds will be gassed.

Canada geese are not kosher, they are a different species from European geese. But they should be processed into food for the poor and homeless.

There is no such thing as a "treife goose". A goose of ANY species is kosher...there are some litvashe yidden who will not eat Canadian geese but this is a minhag and chumrah. With a good chassideshe hashgacha, any goose can be ge'shcected glatt.

Official permission was given a couple of years ago and a number of Canada geese were captured and killed in Rockland County. The meat was supposed to go to poor people. However, after testing, the meat was found to be full of pesticides and toxic chemicals and unsuitable for human consumption.

I don't like the sound of this gassing the canadian geese. I am no animal rights activist, but it does bring back memories from the 1940's.

Fine. Kill them, test them, and then give them to the poor. The last time they were tested they found to be 58% less nutrious than American geese. But the exchange rate was different then. Today it would only be about 16% less nutritious.

Not so LOL. If these geese WERE kosher, and they were to be shechted, they would have to be checked carefully, at least until there was a big enough sample that it would be possible to determine the prevalence of treifos in the general goose population.
FYI, the lungs of male turkeys are checked, and have to be found glatt for the bird to be kosher.

If these bird and plane incidents usually occur near airports, why can't sound systems be set up to emit sounds that scare the birds away but aren't audible to humans? Would these sounds frighten dogs dogs and other animals? Are there any other possible solutions? Killing birds doesn't seem like the right solution. What will stop other birds from arriving? Will there be continuos slaughter of birds to try to keep airports near wetlands safe? Would this solution even work long term? If these wetlands naturally attract birds, should wetlands near airports be destroyed?
