Brooklyn, NY - Borough Park Public School Has First Swine Flu Death |

The building housing IS 609K in Brooklyn, where 11-year-old Sarah Michel was a student.
Sarah Michel, an 11-year-old sixth-grader at Intermediate School 609 in Brooklyn, died late Sunday night. An autopsy Thursday confirmed the H1N1 virus was the cause, school and city officials said.
"It's just terrible. I don't know what to say. We're all grieving right now. We're all mourning my little girl," her mother, Rose Noel-Michel told the Daily News Friday morning.
Relatives said Sarah, who had a heart defect, caught the flu and then had a heart attack. She was first sent home from school June 2 to see a doctor.
One parent said Sarah was out of school for a week before June 2 because "she was very, very sick, but came back with a mask."
Her death is one of three the Health Department reported Thursday from the swine flu, bringing the city toll to 15. The other victims were under 2, and one was between 30 and 39. The announcement came as the World Health Organization declared the virus infection is now a worldwide epidemic.
IS 609, on 16th Ave. in Borough Park, also known as the Urban Assembly School - Criminal Justice, has 159 students in grades six and seven. It shares a building, which was being speed-cleaned last night, with IS 223.
IS 609 Principal Mariela Graham sent a memo home to students Wednesday telling them of the student's death from "a severe case of influenza caused by the H1N1 virus" but urged them not to panic.
The memo said city officials advised her that students are in no danger if they are healthy and have no red-flag symptoms - a cold, cough, fever or sore throat.

I do not mean to belittle the tragedy of this loss, but most of the people who, R"L, have died of Swine Flu to date have had other medical issues.

My grandson is home with it & is quite sick. B"H he has no underlying conditions like this little girl had, but the Yeshiva doesn't seem to care that so many kids have it. I would think it makes sense for a parent who has a child with heart or breathing problems to keep him/her home. I don't understand why the schools that have a lot of kids home (in my einikele's class half the kids are out sick) don't close. All of a sudden they care about the kids missing learning? Feh! More likely parents don't want to make other arrangements.

One of the main problems is that the government (CDC) and the health dept are both withholding information from us. I called the CDC this week, their own employees do not give any info, and their operators are not employees of the CDC . They do not even know how to answer the questions you ask.

The N1H1 virus (the swine flue) is a MILDER version of influenza - the regular flu all your children get every year, the CDC stated that in NEW YORK Approx. 500,000 people have the swine flu, and it all boils down to 3 death that all of them had compromised immune systems, if you have 1/2 ounce of brains you think a moment "is this a joke" and this is called a PANDEMIC? of course it is, all it means is that it is spreading around, so whats the big deal? it does not go around killing everyone in it's way, these are the words announced by the WHO yesterday "all of humanity is under threat" is this a joke? there are 6 billion people in the world and 800 deaths of the swine flu INCLUDING MEXICO, wake up! the regular flu that your doctor tells you that you need to do nothing it'll pass in 3 days KILLS 36,000 people every single bingle year in America alone, so? remember the 'west Nile virus' also was the next monster killer of our generation.
so all you people out there B"H you have brains of yourself so please use it yourself, don't let anyone mess around with whats rightfully yours, only if it makes sense to you- buy it, if not ......

There is no doubt under reporting of this flu from both CDC and local health departmnents to prevent panic. The key to prevent the spread the flu remains frequent hand washing and avoiding contact with those who may show signs of the flu. We need to pray.

Check your history buddy. In 1918 millions of people died from the spanish flu. They also had a milder form of that flu that spread. The Swine flu is expected to mutate and come back stronger. If you in fact had a straight mind you would prepare for it and just practice good hygiene. Get your head out of the sand.

we don't know what the future holds, but if this continues to the winter it will be much stronger, & more severe. in that case those that get it now r actualy lucky-- their immune system is building up & they'll be ahead of the gam. (words from a popular BP peditrician)

It's people like you who need to downplay everything in life because you were spoiled your whole life. Maybe if the government didn't have your mentality- the deaths and very ill people (as few as they might be) wouldn't have occurred. But you don't want to put a hamper on your life style because if you somehow got exposed you would have to be quarrantined. To he-- with the dead people -I only care about myself. BTW, as far I know-not too many young people die from seasonal flu even with people who have other health issues. This flu acts differently. Also, the more people that get it the more chance it has to mutate into a killer. This is what happened in 1918 with the Spanish Flu (H1N1)- it started out mild in the spring and turned deadly by mutating in the fall. How come it doesn't bother you that the gov. spends millions (or billions) of dollars to come up for a cure for the Aids virus which primarily affects low lives whom Hashem probably wants to destroy, but they don't spend or spend very little to find a cure for the flu. The drugs that they have don't destroy the virus -just helps your body fight it off. That's why these drugs don't work a good portion of the time! Neuramindase inhibitors only stop one antigen on the virus, not the other antigens.
