Washington - The dawn of digital television is getting a big reception today. But the big question is whether some TV owners will be getting any reception at all.

Television stations across the U.S. will be shutting off their analog signals and begin broadcasting exclusively in digital. Here at WRGB and the Capital Region's CW, we will be switching to our digital signal at 11:59 p.m.

It's estimated that more than 1 million unprepared homes will end up without any TV service. That's because their older model TV sets get their signals off the air with antennas but don't have a digital converter box to translate the new signals. Cable and satellite subscribers won't be affected.

The changeover was supposed to take place last February. But the government's fund for $40 converter box coupons ran out of money, prompting the delay.

why pay for what's better free? If you have internet, every show is at the end of your fingertips anyhow, and DTV gives you a free alternative.

I got the $40 coupon from the US government and bought a box for $45 at Radio Shack (so it ended up costing only $5).
When you hook it up, you see that each station has 2 or 3 other stations on their channel.
For example 7.1 is regular channel 7, but 7.2 is a new channel and 7.3 is a weather channel.
Channel 4 has an extra channel that shows all sports and channel 13 has an extra channel with kids shows 24 hours. Also channel 31 has an extra channel with 24 hours of kids shows.
And the reception is very good or not at all. There is no static, but if the signal is not coming in strong enough the channel just either freezes up on the last picture or disappears altogether. I don't have a rooftop antenna, only the regular kind.
This is all free with the new box.

Banning TV was one of the successful fights fought by the Chasidim. Most Chasidim don’t have a TV at home. Unfortunately the fight against the Internet and computers looks like a lost fight at the moment. And yes, I'm guilty of it myself!

digital might give a better quality sometimes BUT the signal can't travel as far as analog

if you are having such issues its possible that you are to far from the source of the signal

A good, high-quality antenna should allow everything to come through just fine... especially in a place like NYC. If you are surrounded by too many walls, consider putting an antenna outside. The reception will be much better.

Why do you say that? Because he doesn't have a roof antenna? Not everybody can have one. Especially people who live in old apartment buildings. The landlord doesn't let you put one up on the roof so you're stuck with sticking an antenna on top of the tv.

Some people always look for the bad in someone else, you seem to be that type.

I'm having problems because of the antenna and they don't help you with that. I've tried several different ones but not one gives me all the stations like my old rabbit ears antenna did.

I haven't had a TV in years, but judging by the titles of the shows and what I've read in the papers, it's not like it was in the days of Father Knows Best, Bonanza, or Leave it to Beaver. Titles like Desperate Housewives ( I doubt if the desperation is over cleaning), S-- in the City, Q___ Eye for the Strait Guy make me wonder what TV is doing in a "frum" home.

With the computer there is decent stuff like this site and Torahanytime.com, not only shmutz.

Perhaps you might need an amplified antenna? You didn't mention where you live.

Some people buy an outdoor antenna and put it in the attic.
