Williamsburg, NY - Rabbi Glanz Reponds to Allegations |
|
Williamsburg, NY - The New York City jail chaplain who was suspended after arranging a bar mitzvah for the son of an inmate at the facility known as the Tombs spoke out to Eyewitness News Friday.
Rabbi Leib Glanz admitted that he is concerned about the allegations that he gave special treatment to Orthodox inmates, but refused to discuss them.
"I would wish that I can make comments, but I can't," he said.
Reporter NJ Burkett managed to get Rabbi Glanz outside his home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He was exceptionally polite, but insisted that he is forbidden by his union from discussing the case.
"I saw, I read it, and I know exactly what you're talking about," Glanz said, regarding the accusations. "And believe you me, I want to be respectful to you guys. I am in public life for a lot of years, and I don't want to do bad to anybody. But I can't make no comment about the situation, and I hope you understand me."
Asked about how the allegations reflected on him, he responded, "I'm a human being, and everybody is concerned when it comes to this kind of situation."
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, asked to respond to the controversy on his weekly radio show, told radio host John Gambling, "Oy vey."

The lesson here should be clear. When someone has "protektzia" and manages to get some special treatment or other benefits it should be used with tremendous care.
After this case a religious Jew will not get any considerations whatsoever,. The Corrctions officers will run the other way.

I will just say 'any person living in Williamsburg knows excactly who's responsible for this so called 'BREAKING NEWS' story surfacing 6 months after it happened (it occured on Dec,)
The fact remains Rabbi Glanz hellped every yiddishe neshume that was in need, regardless of his level of yiddishkiet, or chasiddus.
I'm not aware of excectly what transpired that night, neither does anyone of those negetive bloggers who jump ap & down screaming 'CHILLUL HASHEM..."

There can always be exception to the rules. I know of somebody that was let out of jail to attend his childs wedding. Well why should he more than anybody else? But, there is exceptions. What is this whole uproar about? I wish every yiddishe prisoner should be able to attend their childrens simchas. It's painful enough that they are jailed. Do the children & family have to suffer more?

Gentlemen: The prison system is built on privileges !!! One can only look at the amount of money spent by the Saudis in recent years to convert inmates to WAHABI
extreme islamists - Hence, the four terrorists captured in River dale. They spent $500MILLION (yes a matter of record!!) What about the September 11th party yearly celebrated by Islamists in the jails or the family Christmas parties among other special accommodations.
While this may have been different ad disciplinary action was taken for giving this privilege, The real question is whether others have been privileges also similar to these. I believe that if no extra costs are involved, certain guidelines for certain types of prisoners should be defined clearly or an impartial board to review these requests for inmates which might help in rehabilitation.

i spoke to a bucher who was in rikers island for almost a year and said that any time he had any kind of problem reb arye lieb (rebbi glants) was the one to turn to and was his life saviour,

Over the years he did his service with utomost respect and energy.
Every jewish person, has regards for him, even those who are not from williamsburg.
He worked with lawyers, rabbis, probation officers, Police, and judges, everyone saw in him a real askan with a pure yiddish heart.
The media will never understand our appriciation for him, and would try to demote him.
So everyone should send him a letter of support and show him that we are behined him %100.

The rather obvious reason is "because he is in jail". And yes, when you are in jail, there are all sorts of things you don't get to do. Including having a party (with overtime paid for by the New York taxpayers) complete with contraband in jail.
It is also worth noting that the Vort was in April, after he had already plead guilty.

Not disputing Rabbi Glanz's honorable intentions, this incident is not a good thing. Apart from the accusations of favoritism, what kind of schlemiel brings in a catered affair into a jail? The prisoners are known for coming up with any humanly possible scheme to steal stuff and make weapons out of it - surely you don't think the caterers counted every piece of cutlery? Or perhaps was it a scheme to smuggle in stuff that could be made into weapons?
Now every other prisoner has heard about this and Jewish prisoners will be targets.
The other point to remember is that Tuvia Stern is not a pre-trial inmate - he is a convicted felon and as such should be treated just like any other felon.

#48-You are 100% correct. If a frum yid screws up, don't make things worse for all the rest of us by drawing unnecessary attention to the bad things that religious jews sometimes do. So, you are a prisoner in jail? I feel bad for you and your brothers who share your plight, but that doesn't change the fact that prison is no place for "catered simchas". It makes an absurd mockery of the whole prison system, not to mention that it makes a MOCKERY OUT OF JUDAISM, WHICH NONE OF YOU SHTINKERS BOTHERED TO MENTION.

Yes! Just because it happened!.
I could see why you are ashamed due to what happened but that doesn't make it a Chillul Hashem, In my eyes it's a Kiddush Hashem to see at what lengths an individual will go to help a fellow Yid, look at your history, look how tzadikim used to go to courts and kings to ask for fellow Yidden, even if they were in fact guilty, is that reason not to try to help with whatever possible?? and what about the family? should they be punished because you will be embarassed if it ever leaks out?
Also, I don't have to put him on a pedestal he's long been there, even if there IS money involved would you do this for money??
To #55: He is "a very weak character"?? You would shiver before you even think of doing what he has accomplished in his life.

All are 'lavish' for one reason and one reason only; BECAUSE THE GOOD JEWS WHO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCESS OF THESE AFFAIRS PROVIDE THE BEST AND THE NICEST, ALL IN THE SPIRIT OF GIVING CHARITY AT THE HIGHEST ORDER. tHE CATERERS DONT EVEN KNOW THE NAMES OF THE PRISONERS; THE ENTERTAINERS DONT KNOW THE NAMES OF THE PRISONERS. GLANTZ LETS OUT THE WORD THAT HE TRYING TO LIFT THE SPIRITS OF THE PRISONERS OR THE BAR MITZVAH BOY, WHO SHOULD HAVE THE SAME BAR MITZVAH SO HE DOESN'T FEEL THAT IT IS IN A PRISON. SO EVERYONE CALLED UPON TO CONTRIBUTE, PROVIDE THE BEST AND THE FINEST AND NICEST IN HONOR OF THE OCCASION. tHAT PRISONER DOES NOT HAVE A POT TO .... IN. tHIS IS THE PRESS HYPE TO MAKE US LOOK BAD. Rabbi Glantz keep up the good work. The truth will free you. ”
The truth will not free him; the truth will get him into more trouble. You wouldn't believe what was just reported on AM 770 radio at 8:05 am Monday monrning....an exclusive bombshell on this story: Rabbi Glantz's office was used by the Jewish inmates for more than just kosher snacking. I don't think there has EVER been a greater chillul hashem caused by this big tzaddik.

I knew nothing of this until Friday when two detectives came to my home investigating Rabbi Glantz. I am not Jewish, but the love of my life is. He was nearly dead after suffering with a horrible drug addiction for 7 years. I tried everything and failed to help him. He was not a criminal, he was simply ill. I did not sleep at night because I was terrified of waking up next to his dead body. While in the tombs, Rabbi Glantz lovingly took him under his wing and gave him something to live for. I truly believe that he saved my beloved's life. It saddens me that so many horrible criminals go free, but the detectives find the time to investigate this good man. Although the detectives did say that everyone they had spoken with said that he is a great man, just like I told them. I wish for Rabbi Glantz the best in the world.
