Israel - Yisrael Beiteinu Mks Leah Shemtov and Moshe Matalon will present to the government's Ministerial Law Committee a proposed law that, if enacted, would require all schools in Israel to teach Zionism and Israeli history.

The law would require that all schools teach the subjects for at least three hours a week. Arab schools would be required to teach the curriculum as well.

"It's a good idea for a country that was founded on the basis of Zionism to teach its values, along with the history of the Jewish nation, to the coming generations," said Matalon. "A nation that does not know its past has no future."

How will the hareidi schools handle courses in Zionism and the history of the medinah. Perhaps they will have to hire secular teachers to handle this instruction since very few of the current hareidi educators even know that that EY exists as an independent and sovereign state.

nothing wrong with learning the history of the country in which you live, or even learning about the history of zionism- it's all very important stuff to know. what's disturbing is the idea of teaching the "values" of zionism. that sounds like indoctrination for me. if they want to make schools learn about zionism, at least let them choose their own curriculum for it.

I doubt they hareidi yeshivot will take the time out of the school day to instruct their yinglach about Zionism since many of them are not big supporters of the state until moishicah returns (and based on recent events it sounds like that may not be for a while).

It's also a good idea for a nation that was built on the basis of the Torah to teach its values along with the history of the nation to the coming generations.

Bh, the Israel gov. is waking up and it's about time it stopped funding schools that rant against the hashkafos and history that pay for them to function. If the schools don't like it let them not accept money and see how long they last,

Which history books will they use? They should translate them into English and provide them to the public schools, universities, and public libraries in the US which are all infiltrated with Palestinian propoganda..

Independent and sovereign? Not since the medine accepted aid from the US, and even before that in 1956 the medine cowered to US pressure.

Our nation's past does not begin in 1948. It begins 3321 years ago. Unfortunately, der heiligah Medinah doesn't get that.

And some of us need to be reminded that our connection to Eretz Yisroel didn't end in 1948!

The Israeli govt will never be able to force chareidi schools to learn their required curriculum if they don't take any benefits from them. The satmar rebbe said already in his sefer V'yoel Moshe. That those who will take money from the medinah will one day have to learn subjects the govt will force them to and that aren't appropriate for a chareidi yeshiva. He said this 50 yrs ago,and proved to be true 50 yrs later. Only those who don't take money from the medinah aren't bound to their requirements.

Its the ruach hakodesh from the Satmar Rebbe that kept back satmar and other schools from taking money from the medina.

Chinuch Atzmai is not subject to government control, and therefore will not be affected by this. The MMD schools already teach it. The main benefit will be in the secular government schools, where kids will finally learn that the Jews are not colonists but rather the native population, and the Arabs are the colonists.

Maybe that's why israel is in such bad shape because they don't teach history. Within a few years of teaching history israel will be a safe heaven for jews .....

to Anonymous 16, sorry but i don't see any "ruach hakodesh" and i don't see why its "not appropriate for a chareidi yeshiva" why is this any different from a American boy learning about American history.
there are subjects that are not appropriate for chareidi yeshivas but this isn't one of them.

I have read the book "1948" pictured in this blog. It is a must read, if only, so that this generation should not take the Medinah for granted. When one studies the immense struggles and the courage of those Jews who fought in 1948 aganist such daunting odds, and how we almost did not succeed, you have to have some hakaros hatov for those brave men and woman who sacrificed so that we may enjoy the fruits of those sacrifices. It also should prompt us to do more, sacrifice in our own ways, and not just live off the efforts of others.
