Washington - Obama Welcomes Netanyahu's Two-state Speech |

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Sunday that US President Barack Obama welcomes the
Israeli Reactions
speech and is committed to two states: a Jewish state of Israel and an independent Palestinian state.
Gibbs says Obama will work with all parties to see that they fulfill their obligations and head toward regional peace.
"The President welcomes the important step forward in Prime Minister Netanyahu's speech. The President is committed to two states, a Jewish state of Israel and an independent Palestine, in the historic homeland of both peoples," Gibbs said.
"He believes this solution can and must ensure both Israel's security and the fulfillment of the Palestinians' legitimate aspirations for a viable state, and he welcomes Prime Minister Netanyahu's endorsement of that goal.
"The President will continue working with all parties - Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Arab states, and our Quartet partners - to see that they fulfill their obligations and responsibilities necessary to achieve a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and a comprehensive regional peace."
Speaking at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar Ilan University on Sunday, Netanyahu
endorsed the creation of a Palestinian state that would exist alongside Israel.
However, Netanyahu repeatedly stressed, any such entity must not be armed. "The territory under Palestinian control must be demilitarized with ironclad security provisions for Israel," the prime minister said.
"If we receive this guarantee regarding demilitarization and Israel’s security needs, and if the Palestinians recognize Israel as the State of the Jewish people, then we will be ready in a future peace agreement to reach a solution where a demilitarized Palestinian state exists alongside the Jewish state," he said.

Dovor veloh chatzi dovor. Listen to the conditions that Netanyahu specified. He was not joking about any of them, and you should not bully him into backing down from any of these basics. Please do not do the unspeakable cruelty of hearing only part of the message and discarding the rest. Do not forsake Israel by giving terrorists "rights".

It doesn't matter what's agreed to beforehand, if a state is established it will form a military, even if it's at first called a police force; even without a state, that's what Arafat did, with the cooperation of successive Israeli governments including Netanyahu's. And it will sign mutual defense treaties with Arab states, which will give them the right to intervene should Israel try to enforce the demilitarisation that was agreed on.
In other words, these conditions are nonsense, and Netanyahu knows it.

when Natanyahu started to talk, Obama was playing gulf. when Robert Gibbs gave out his statement, Obama was still in middle of playing gulf. So when did gibbs talk to Obama? and when did Obama give this statements?

Millhouse is right. Once they have their own state, they will begin expanding the scope of their sovereignty so Netanyahu's words today are really a way of getting past the right wing of his coalition. Clearly, Netanyahu understands that to move the process forward, he has to mollify the hard liners. Today's speech was a brilliant strategic move that threads a middle ground between Obama's demands and the hawks in the coaltion. The next step will be for Netanyahu to find a way to begin removing the settlements.

i suggest you go and listen to the entire speech instead of relying on little snippets. bibi said that gaza was a failure that only brought about more violence; he said that settlements are not the obstacle, but rather the arabs are. he also said that he would be happy to make a palestinian state provided that they disarm and renounce terror, a condition which he knows full well will never be fulfilled. basically, he managed to please obama by 'agreeing' to a two-state solution, while setting up a situation in which it cannot happen because the caveats will never be fulfilled, and then he cannot be blamed for not following through on his 'promise'.

Anyone who does not understand on their own how stupid they sound telling people half a world away how best to protect and defend themselves and which issues deserve sending their sons into battle, anyone who needs this explained to them will not understand it no matter how many times and how clearly it is explained to them.
Perhaps if you got out of your comfortable lounger in Monsey and put your money where your over-sized mouth is,(or as they say in the 'hood, walked the walk instead of just talk the talk) and moved where the options under consideration translate into body bags and lost limbs, maybe then you would understand how foolish you appear, thinking that anyone is interested in your opinions as to battles for Bibi should consider being prepared to lose how many young lives and limbs.
