Brooklyn, NY - Rabbi Gershon Tannenbaum: Newspapers Misrepresented The Noble Deeds Of Chaplain Rabbi |
|
Several leading observant organizations have joined in an effort to encourage the chaplain to continue his good work. They will be releasing a joint statement of support. In order to present the other side of the story, we present the following.
Biography Of Rabbi Leib Glanz
Rabbi Leib Glanz was born in 1958 in Brooklyn. He was raised in the Williamsburg community, where he still resides with his wife. His four married children and their families all reside nearby.
Active in community work since he was a teenager, Rabbi Glanz has been honored and hailed by countless organizations for his devotion to civic justice and community values. While still a high school student, Leib Glanz, in conjunction with the world famous Satmar Bikur Cholim, coordinated hospital visits to the ill and elderly, to feed them and cheer their spirits. In addition, he also coordinated home visits to the needy and homebound, bringing them food packages.
A graduate of the United Talmudical Academy of Satmar (UTA), Rabbi Glanz has spent more than 30 years in a career as an educator and administrator. In 1985 he joined the administration of UTA, the largest private religious school system in the country with an enrollment of more than 18,000 students, directing the educational institution during its great expansion. In this position, he expanded the system with advanced programs, which were innovative in teaching students with special needs. Under his direction, UTA acquired several additional academic facilities, introduced a state-of-the-art computer based management system, and developed an ambitious new graduate program.
In addition to galvanizing the UTA school system, directing the entire management team and supervising all administrative matters, Rabbi Glanz devoted a vast amount of his time and efforts to community service. From 1978-1996, he coordinated and directed Hatzoloh of Brooklyn North, the local emergency volunteer corps. Since 1987, Rabbi Glanz co-directed Hatzoloh's annual fundraising events and the Satmar community's vast array of charity efforts for thousands of needy families. He also chairs the community drive to help children with special needs. From 1995-2004, he served as community coordinator for United Jewish Organization of Williamsburg, the umbrella organization of more than 100 social, health, and welfare organizations.
Rabbi Glanz spearheaded the reorganization of Shomrim, the Williamsburg Safety Patrol, in coordination with the NYPD and other city agencies, successfully establishing productive and warm relations with a host of community groups reflecting the diverse needs and backgrounds of the Williamsburg community. He continues his involvement with Chaverim and Satmar Bikur Cholim volunteer organizations.
Rabbi Glanz was presented with a medal of honor by Mayor Rudy Giuliani for assisting and counseling the families and friends of passengers of TWA flight 800, immediately after the tragic accident, for more than 72 hours, uninterrupted. Rabbi Glanz is also recognized for coordinating volunteers for food distribution to the hundreds of police, firefighters and other officers immediately following the 9/11 disaster. The rabbi continued to assist families and staff at Ground Zero for several weeks thereafter. In February 2007, he was appointed as Senior Advisor to Congressman Ed Towns.
Rabbi Glanz's vocation has engaged him in spiritual guidance to individuals of all backgrounds and faiths. This work with society's most vulnerable led him to a career turn. Confident that he can make a difference, he handed over the responsibilities for school administration to his successor and entered the chaplaincy of the New York City Department of Corrections (DOC). In this capacity, he provides spiritual counseling and comfort to both the incarcerated, their families, as well as to the employees of the DOC.
In 2003, he was promoted to administrative chaplain to oversee and coordinate the work of chaplains of other faiths in religious planning and programming for the DOC. In addition to providing policy input and sensitivity training to the DOC and NYPD Brooklyn North.
The DOC has conferred several awards on Rabbi Glanz. In 2002, he received the Commissioner's Five Star Award, and on several occasions he was presented with the Employee of the Month or Man of the Year Award. In June of 2005, he was presented with the Humanitarian Award from the Maccabee Society as well as the New York State Assembly Citation and Humanitarian Award.
A lifelong resident of the City of New York, Rabbi Glanz is grateful for the opportunity to serve this great city and state he so deeply loves, and to work with the public safety professionals he so admires.

Rabbi Glanz is not a chaplain or associated with NYU in any manner- I am familiar with all the chaplains there who are wonderful people and he is not amongst them- this does not diminish the person or his deeds- just a correction for the sake of accuracy

I am personally familiar with the good works of Rabbi Glantz, and I can catagorically state that he is a most selfless individual who has dedicated his life to helping others. He is utterly tireless in his efforts. If he would have exerted the same dedication and effort to any business venture he would have been a millionaire. Instead he chose to be a millionaire in mitzvos. Unfortunately, one of his acts of kindness got ahead of him, and once politics comes into the picture it mercilessly destroys everthing in it's path.

Jun 17, 2009 at 04:10 PM Rabbi Glanz is a tzadik but a wrongdoing was performed... Says:
I am not here to pass judgement on anyone. Let's take a step back and look at it from the outside. If a person of another race/religion would have done this we would all be demanding heads roll. The people who left their jobs resigned they were not fired. They may have been forced to resign, but the counsel they hired seemed to agree that that was the best move for them. I am not a lawyer, but it seems that they forfeited all rights to sue the city by resigning. The Muslim Chaplin is not taking that route. He is sticking around even though everyone is pointing a finger at him. Obviously, he either feels he can get away with this or is daring the city to fire him. This is called "putting up a stand" and Rabbi Glanz didn't do it.
I also believe that the important lesson is being missed here. We have a person in jail who obviously thinks the world is for his own enjoyment. Never mind how many people he stole from. He took advantage of a nice person doing a nice thing and went way overboard. He laughed at the city and the police. If someone would do this to you you would look for ways to come down hard. If he is still in jail, I am sure he is now rooming with a very large non-caucasian who doesn't disapprove of the toeva law. But, to get back at this personmeans getting back at ALL those who helped him. So, even though Rabbi Glanz was taken advantage of, he was a party (no pun intended) to a disgrace to the city by its employees - and yes, that is a fireable offense.
There are worse things that people can say about you than calling you "naive". But, very few that will make you lose your job this fast.

It's quite different.
When a singer comes to entertain at a prison it is a public event for the inmates sponsored by the prison authorities.
The bar-mitzvah seems to be a private event for the entertainment of guests.

For upward of 30 years, the king of chesed Reb Arye Leib Glanz has worked tirelessly to enhance public safety, overseen charitable efforts to provide food and other assistance to the indigent and emergency medical care to New Yorkers, and ministered to the needs of the hospitalized and incarcerated.

In UTA there is no such thing as graduate it is a lie. So the argument goes, because, he did all these good deeds therefore what???? He resigned he was not fired
Again I am not discounting Rabbis’ good deeds it seems to me he did much more then I will ever do, but that does not give any right to Mr. Weiss to come up with such a stupid idea and entangle such a good Rabbi in his schemes. As Jews it behooves us to support the outlandish idea that if you are incarcerated, you still have any right to bring in 60 guests and dine on fine-china, enough is enough. If this would have been Madof’s son you would had still yell and scream “ah gavalt”

I don't know this Rabbi but I can tell you this...
For a man that has spent his whole life looking for ways to help people, this man has always and will always try to accomodate.
He's not the prison guard. Its not his job to keep the prisoners in or the guests out. He's there to try to make their stay as decent as possible.
If any of you tried to accomplish your goals as hard as he tried to accomplish his then you wouldn't have time to post stories.
Don't you dare judge a man that you will never be able to measure up to. It'll. Just make you look stupid.

Rabbi Glanz deserves the chance to defend himself. We should not deny him that elementary right.
"describing leftover or rejected institutional kosher meals as gourmet, when in reality they do not meet the standards of detested airline food."
So R. Tannenbaum is claiming that at the bar mitzvah and vort all they served was rejected and leftover meals? Hard to believe...Please clarify...
The NY Post is a paper (or should I say rag) that specializes in dirt. So one has to treat what they write with caution and not necessarily believe it all.
On the other hand, that doesn't mean that there is no kernel of truth there.
Rabbi Tannenbaum knows about the prison system from personal experience. Why doesn't he tell the readers about his own experience with it, so they can understand where he is coming from?

Facilitating such a lavish party for a rich prisoner who had just been convicted of a felony was bad enough but I wouldn't call such lack of judgement a chilul hashem. What worries me more is the NY Times story late today that the Manhattan District Attorney office is also investigating whether money changed hands to make this happen. If Rav Lanz accepted a bribe, that would mamash be a real chilul hashem. Lets hope that is not true.

Mr. Clarify:
Rabbi Glanz was totally concerned with his responsibilities. He would take the unserved leftover meals from yeshivas and from chasunahs to the frum guys who are unfortunately locked up and otherwise get the most meager of kosher meals, almost always cold.. A warm meal, for Orthodox Jews in jail, is a luxury.
Ordinarily, they do not get salads. They get raw vegetables and would have to indiviidually make their own combinations on their tiny meal trays, all with plastic plates, forks, and knives. Their bread is not delivered every day. Half of the week, they have to make do with stale bread. Rabbi Glanz is a tzaddik and does not get paid for all the extra chesed work performed.
The goyim have parties all the time, literally every weekend, and get entertainers all the time. The individual religions get representatives (speakers, spiritual singers, spiritul healers, motivational speakers, etc.) from their respective churches, mosques, etc. The unfortunate Yiddilech get almost nothing.
By the way, most of the frum guys locked up in the Tombs or in Rikers have not yet been tried or sentenced. They should have your benifit of doubt. Legally, they are innocent until found guilty by a jury after trial.

Its one thing being nice to the yiddish prisoners, however there was poor judgement here! We are so used to this "chutzpah" so we manage to "justify" this type of behavior! Enough! That was not Rabbi Tanenbaum's intention sir. His point was that since the Post has villified and character assasinated Rabbi Glantz, he wasnted to show who Rabbi Glantz really is and hence to negate the disgusting manor in which the NY Post presents the facts.

No one is taking away anything that Rabbi Glanz has done but the bottom line is that someone is in jail for a crime that he committed. Being imprisoned means that he did something against society and must be punished for it. Rabbi Tenanbaum means well, however Rabbi Glanz's actions were AGAINST prison policy and all he managed to do here was create a huge chillul Hashem. And that, my friends, means that on top of people like Bernie Madoff and given the world one more reason to hate us.

"The invitation for a popular Jewish singer to perform in the DOC facility is no different than the welcoming of thousands of other singers and musicians to entertain inmates throughout the year in prison systems across the United States, except that this volunteer performer is an observant Jew and sings Jewish songs. I am sure that Rabbi Glantz is honorable and well meaning, but that is not the issue at hand. I am sure that he has done plenty of good things in his life, but again that is not what the Post was arguing with. What happenned here is a straight out CHILUL HASHEM. Rabbi Glantz was in a position to give special favors to fellow Jews and got caught doing outlandish illegal and ugly things only for Jews. To read that " in prisoned Jews were allowed to participate in special receptions but the blacks and hispanics were called in to clean up" does not make for a Kiddush Hashen and does not make Jews beloved among our fellow humans. We read in parshas Shlach that all the Meraglim were great people, and had plent of Zichuyos, but they still were responsible for a huge tragedy that befell the Dor HaMidbar. A Chillul Hashem was done.

Then Rabbi Tannenbaum should have made it clear that he was not addressing that specific event. I am not trying to miminize all the good that Rabbi Glanz has done in the years that he was employed by DOC. The Bar Mitzvah event may have been an abberration but should have been addressed.

Rabbi Glanz used to work with UJO and Rabbi Moshe Dovid Niederman before the big machlokes in Satmar. Rabbi Glanz is a tzaddik but may have extended his chesed too far. These quotes of 60 outside guests and talk of china and silver flatware is a fiction of the NY Post. Most likely, every single Jew in the jail at that time was invited, just like only goyim are invited to their own functions (moslems, catholics, protestants, evangelicals, baptists, etc., etc.). Further, Rabbi Gershon Tannenbaum was being melamed zechus and giving the other side of the story or, if you prefer, the rest of the story. The Post did not give Rabbi Glanz even one word of praise or acknoweldgement of his years of good work for the Jewish community or for the prison community. All the Post wants to do is sensationalize a story, make outrageous headlines, and sell newspapers. Rabbi Glanz was a korban to the Post's lust to get attention and sell papers. One of the writers sounds like a heimishe name, zull ehr brennen in Gehenom. After the dust and the mud settles, I hope Mayor Bloomberg and the prison system refuses to accept Rabbi Glanz's resignation. That would be a true service to the public.

Rabbi Glanz did a thousand times the chesed for Jewish inmates that the muslim did for his brothers in the slammer. Forget about fair play. That mosselim called 9-11 a zionist conspiracy.
