Israel - A report published today by the Ministry of Transport's chief investigator of accidents Adv Raz Yitzhak determines that El Al pilots did not act according to procedures and were responsible for a "near-accident" incident between an El Al plane and Uzbekistan Airways plane.

An Uzbekistan Airways plane was landing at Ben Gurion International Airport when an El Al jumbo stood on the runway on which the Uzbek plane was to touch down. The two aircraft were close to collision, when an air traffic controller noticed what was about to happen, and instructed the Uzbek plane to fly on for another circuit before landing.

Adv. Yitzhak wrote in the report that even though the control tower sent a fax immediately after the incident to the chief investigator, classifying the incident as medium severe, the El Al crew only sent a report the following day after completing a flight to New York. Their fax did not indicate the severity of the incident, which is against procedures.

Adv. Yitzhak found that the air traffic controllers at the airport worked perfectly in this instance, and the alertness of the controller prevented an accident.

El Al declined to respond to this report.

I flew into TLV via Lufthansa. While I always feel the aproach is long and roundabout the pilot aborted and flew around. He later explained that the landing strip was not yet clear of traffic and depite being cleared Lufthansa rules prohibit landing in such a case.
It seems that there is too much laxity going on at TLV.

...some time ago, the Israeli equivalent of the FCC blamed the near misses at the airport on the Pirate radio stations. Specifically, it blamed Arutz Sheva for "stepping on" the Radio frequencies of the Control tower!

Bull. A7 was nowhere near those frequencies. This is just a political attack.
