“I think we are in a good position, should it become necessary, to protect American territory,” Gates told reporters at the Pentagon today.
Gates said he has directed the deployment of missile interceptors to Hawaii and the positioning of a radar system near the islands.

Strategic location, look at Pearl Harbor and for the simple reason it's American soil that's in range. Of course if the chatter is saying HI, it might be a good idea for AK to be ready.
