Ramapo, NY - Variances from zoning codes for the proposed Bobover Yeshiva on Route 306 have been rejected by the town.

The Zoning Board of Appeals rejected allowing the variances by a 4-1 vote.

It was uncertain today whether Bobover would appeal to the state Supreme Court.

Following that public hearing, the zoning board voted 3-2 to grant variances to Mesifta Beth Shraga for a yeshiva and dormitory project on Camp Hill Road.

Town attorneys, though, felt that a supermajority or a 4-1 vote, was needed to overcome reservations that the county Department of Planning had about the project.

Mesifta Beth Shraga's attorney, Ira Emanuel, disagreed today, and said he would be seeking the Planning Board's approval of a final site plan.

This is the yeshiva and bes medrash of Rav Yechiel Halberstam, the Pokshivnitzer Rebbe Shlita. I have no doubt that those misguided bochurim from the yeshiva that dragged a cow into the nursery school and practiced their shechita skills last month are at least partially responsible for this outcome.

My recollection is that the Bobover Rebbe, z'tl, was not personally involved in directing these bochurim to use the nursery school in a residential neighborhood as a shoichthaus. Nonetheless, the head of the Bobover yeshiva took responsiblility and appologized to the community. Apparently, that was not enough.

I hope the Bobover organization does not fight the Ramapo town's decision, by appealing. There are plenty of other options in the Metropolitan, tri state area and if they force themselves on a town and win, the entire relationship will be painful and difficult, so I would accept the decision, thereby saving lawyer's fees and state appeal filing fees, and move on to greener pastures.
If they don't want Chasidim there, our brothers can find a more friendly town and get along nicely with more supportive people. One foolish incident (with that cow), does not define an entire community. I'm sure the Ramapo people have had their own foolish incidents in their past. Their loss of local town business, will become the Bobover gain elsewhere.

All large institutions: Stay away from monsey and vicinity. If you want a large building, build in Brooklyn.
