New York - State Approves Controversial Egg Donor Payments |
|
Donating eggs involves hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to release a batch of eggs in one go. It is uncomfortable, can cause complications, and the long-term risks remain uncertain.
Clinics in the US will pay several thousand dollars to women donating eggs for IVF. But most ethics bodies have come down against paying donors for research – following the lead of the US National Academies, which in 2005 issued guidelines discouraging the practice. As a result, stem cell biologists have struggled to obtain enough eggs for cloning experiments.
Now the Empire State Stem Cell Board – which will award $50 million each year for stem cell research in New York over the coming decade – has decided that modest payments can be made.
"We were unable to come up with an ethical reason for why we should pay for reproductive donations, but not for research," says David Hohn of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, who sat on the ethics committee that made the recommendation.
Jonathan Moreno, a bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, who co-chaired the panel that wrote the National Academies' guidelines, worries that there may be a public backlash against the decision, given that many Americans remain uncomfortable with cloning research.
Other states with stem cell initiatives will now be keeping a close eye on public opinion. But the hands of the largest, in California, are tied, given a 2006 law banning payments other than direct expenses.

Thank you, Dr. Mengele. This twit went to how many years of university, took umpteen courses in Philosophy, Sociology, Symbolic Logic, etc and he can't see a difference between producing ova for reproduction and producing them for research? His parents ought to demand that the college refund their tuition.

Science must be the first of the line! If not science we are ignorant as animals! Can we rely at people of the previous generations who didn't have a clue in medical science biology you name it? Our strange is wisdom, so we can't allow any abstocel. So the government is right.

Speak for yourself. You are a stranger to wisdom. In your illiterate post I hear the bleating of sheep.

"... abstocel. ..."
This misspelling (almost as good as "Noiach with 7 mistakes") occurred with "science" being available to society at large.
Can anyone imagine, Al Achas Kamoh V'kamoh, how much worse the spelling would be and how much more incoherent (i.e. "... Our strange is wisdom ...") these paragraphs might be if science were removed Chas V'sholoim?

100% right. But do you know how easy it is to find a tutor.
