Lesley Hughes claims the defendants made untrue and defamatory accusations that she was anti-Semitic. She says that, as a result, former federal Liberal leader Stéphane Dion revoked her candidacy in the Manitoba riding of Kildonan-St. Paul last September.

The allegations made by Hughes in her statement of claim have not been heard or proven in court.

Hughes acknowledges in her lawsuit that she wrote a column in a Winnipeg newspaper in 2002 that suggested Israeli businesses in the World Trade Center had advance knowledge of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Hughes claims senior members of the Canadian Jewish Congress and B’nai Brith persuaded Dion to revoke her candidacy on the grounds she was anti-Semitic.

She also claims that Kent, then a Conservative candidate and now minister of state for foreign affairs, issued a news release Sept. 26, 2008, saying Hughes held “extreme, anti-Israel … conspiracy theories” and was “unfit to serve for public office.”

Hughes claims she “is no longer employable in her role as a freelance journalist/broadcaster.”

Tough! Maybe she’ll think twice next time before using her position as a journalist to promote hate. And the message is a great one for every other “respectable” journalist out there. It’s a pity the US doesn’t even rebuke US journalists for their anti-Israel, anti-Jewish bias which fuels the fires of hate.

Maybe at the time she thought that the pen was mightier than the sword, but where did it get her, people remembered every word that she wrote, and Jews have very long memories! If she would try to run 10 or 20 years from now, those word would still come back to haunt her!! Let’s first start with sincere apologies to the Canadian Jewish Communities, and to whoever may have read her articles. Her apology may not be worth beans but it is still a START!!!!

I’d use a somewhat stronger term, but as we should be dignified in our speech, let’s merely call this woman an attention seeker. Her lawyer is either stupid enough to believe her, completely incompetent, or a crook to take money from someone on a sure fire losing case.
