Aside from our former Governor, it seems like these goiyeshe, "born again", evangelical republicans are taking the lead over jewish politicians in the infidelity rankings. On the other had, I'm not convinced that there is a correlation between marital fidelity and political competence as Spitzer demonstrated compared to the Patterson.

What is with these GOP conservatives? They really need to learn to keep their pants on or at least stop telling everyone else how they observe "family values." Hypocrites.

Once and for all maybe people will recognize the fundamental hypocricy of these conservative "family values" right wing Republicans. They are all a bunch of liars and immoral jerks who tell the rest of us what to do while living a deceitful life. At least the Dems don't try to tell us how to live our lives (they have a hard enough time with their own as Spitzer will be the first to acknowledge)>

In dissent with the Republican Party of South Carolina, Sanford, whose faith is Episcopal, opposes the faith-based license plates his state offers, marketed largely to the state's conservative evangelical citizens. After allowing the law to pass without his signature, he wrote, "It is my personal view that the largest proclamation of one's faith ought to be in how one lives his life."

What are you talking about? Republicans are nowhere near the lead in this or in any other kind of moral slippage. Occasionally someone slips, but it's nothing like the level found among the Democrats.

The fact that people are sinful doesn't mean that you shouldn't listen to them when they tell you to be moral. Just because someone is a hypocrite doen't invalidate his message. As a Party, the Republicans represent and support (or should) traditional American values like self reliance, personal responsibilty and small government. The Republican Party believes that people are mart enough and capable enough to run their own lives, thankyouverymuch. Yes, I know that the Republican Party today honors these concepts more in the breach than in the observance. That's the reason the the Party is af gehakte tzuris these days. The Democratic Party, on the other hand, believes that people need the Government to take care of them and tell them what to do, think, and believe. Anyway those are my political views. You all are entitled to yours. (That's a real Republican Concept. Democrats don't believe that anyone is entitled to any political view except their own.) The bottom line is that you don't need Republicans or Democrats to tell you to lead a moral life. We, thank G-d, have Toras Moshe to tell us how to live.

These problems with public vs private morality go back many years. Remember Nelson Rockefeller with both Happy and later that librarian. Seems that Rupublicans give into temptation as much as Democrats. I never vote for anyone who has followed such an imoral lifestyle,

yes, but democrats aren't pious, holier-then-thou hypocrites. Amazingly, as liberals, they believe in staying out of your bedroom and private life and that your moral choices are solely between you and your god.

Typical Conservative.

We can visit Communist countries, hobnob with Muslim dictators, spend recklessly and double the national debt, "bailout" corporations, and cheat on our wives.... cause cause... we have good "values".

The Republican party mantra should be: "do as I say, but not as I do."

That was not the point at all. What the commenter was trying to say was, don't preach family values (which Sanford did, his WHOLE political life), if you are not going to follow them. He should resign, not because of moral issues, but for hypocrisy.

What ruins political life is the hypocrisy, not the bad behavior. The number politicians who have had illicit relationships is beyond count (Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Clinton, etc.). The difference is that these guys didn't make a political issue out of morality. What brought Spitzer down was not prostitution, it was his "holier than thou" attitude. Clinton never ran on a platform of "family values" and thus was able to get away with it. Sanford will probably resign: he ran on a platform of "good values" and called on other politicians who were caught in similar situations to resign. Hypocrisy will have done him in.

The diff between the democrats and republicans when it comes to legal matters is quite contrasting. Republicans generally push the offender out of office while the democraps are busy forgiving.

Its safe to say that the Republicans hold their people to a HIGHER standard.

If you look at the sex scandals of the last 20 years (search google for lists), you will find that roughly 61% were Republicans. I'm not defending the claim, just stating the facts.

Really? Can you give a few examples? It seems to me that the overwhelming majority of smugness and self-righteousness is to be found in the Democrats and points left. Republicans, especially religious ones, tend NOT to puff themselves up.
