Brooklyn, NY - City Council Delivers Over $5 Million of “kosher pork”

Brooklyn, NY - The New York City Council delivered over $5 million in funds to Jewish organizations and neighborhoods in the Fiscal Year 2010 budget passed last Friday at City Hall.

Despite the tough economic times, the City Council was able to direct funding to dozens of neighborhood organizations such as the Masbia, Bonei Olam, Shomrim Safety Patrol, Chaverim, and Chai Lifeline and to vital citywide organizations such as the Metropolitian Council on Jewish Poverty, Agudath Israel of America, OHEL Children’s Home and Family Services, Mekimi, and Yeled V’Yalda Early Childhood Center.

“These organizations provide invaluable support to families across the city and I am proud to have helped them fulfill their missions. This would not have been possible without the hard work and cooperation of Councilman Felder and Speaker Christine Quinn,” said Councilman Fidler.

“We are grateful to the entire City Council and in particular Councilmen Felder and Fidler for their tireless advocacy on our behalf. With layoffs, business collapses, and the needs of New Yorkers increasing daily, this will help us provide our crucial services to those who need it most,” said William Rapfogel, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty.

“Thanks to the great work of Councilmen Felder and Fidler, Speaker Quinn and Mayor Bloomberg, our organization will be able to continue helping people acquire new skills, gain access to affordable housing, and provide social services to the poor and elderly. Moreover, the restoration of funds for the Priority 7 childcare vouchers will help thousands of low-income families in our community,” said Rabbi David Zwiebel, Executive Director of Agudath Israel of America.

“I am proud that I was able to help deliver funding to help support the vital services provided by these outstanding nonprofit organizations. Good schools, clean parks, and well funded local organizations are the necessary ingredients for ensuring that our community continues to be a great place for seniors, families, and young people to live,” said Councilman Felder. “I want to thank Speaker Quinn, Councilman Lew Fidler, and my colleagues in the City Council for recognizing the importance of these groups and making sure they receive the funding they need to serve the community.”

Just as President Obama has capped salaries and bonuses of ceo's of companies that accept TARP funds from the taxpayers, so should the city council cap the compansation of the heads of some of these organizations that accept public funding. Some of these organization heads make in the hundreds of thousands of dollars per year while taking city dollars that could have been used as RE tax rebates for the common citizens. They also do mass mailings of shnur letters asking for charity while their officers live like kings. There is no accountability. Before responding to a fund raising letter, the tzedaka should be required to list the salaries of its high level employees. What is going on here is an outrage.

I got a telemarketing call for a charity last month and told the caller I will give a $100.00 donation if they send me in writing the salaries of the 5 top paid employees. I have not yet heard back from them. I wonder why.

In almost every case these organizations provide services that are totally reimbursed by state funds. try approaching them with a special child that is not yet approved with a case number, they will provide testing (a reimbursed, profitable service) and make you wait years for any real help. The only people that really benefit are the 20 hour a week employees that are paid for 40 hours and the top people that are paid more that the Pres of the USA.

Why dont the Rebbes do an investigation of all the negitives regarding these institutions and air the facts. It is possible that by giving a donation to these organizations you aren't m'kiem the mitzvah of tzedaka.

Everything put aside, when needed these organizations are the only ones we have to turn to. i guess if the non jewish organizations get the money why shouldn't we? Besides we pay heavy taxes and we don't get free public schools, so yes i don't see the problem of these organizations getting the money.

The real issue is that by giving donations you are rewarding the corrupt system, possibly committing the aveirah of lifnei eever, let alone not doing tzedaka.
next time you are asked for donations ask two questions;
1, What is the highest salary paid?
2, Do any other family members of the Directors get money, perhaps even work while in another state, ostensibly as fundraisers?

We pay taxes for public schools and then pay tuition for our kids. This is the very least the government can give us. We should all get vouchers.

#12 finally the voice of reason. As for the rest of you- such a group of slef haters I have a hard time believing you guys are Frum. Every putz goyishe organization gets this money but when our groups get it you just cant stand stand it.Most of this money goes back to helping us to deny that is simply ignorance.
My Gosh crawl back under your misrable rock. These are our organizations fighting for us- stop the self hatred its painful to read and I have news for you, those who also read this love the Jew bashing, your doing their work for them.

The way some of these charitable outfits spend our tax dollars and donations is sinful. For the leaders of these outfits to pay themselves huge salaries which ultimatly comes from our hard earned zedaka money borders on g'neiva. They call us asking for donations to help children in need and them use the money for lavish salaries. Did Councilman Felder investigate the use of our money before allocating it to high paid executives.

Never give money to a telemarketing call for a charity. They're usually run by professional fundraisers who give only a small fraction of the money to the charity.

Oh #11, who should the Rebbes hire to do the investigation? Sherlock Heimish? (I know, bad joke, but I couldn't resist)

Actually, we do get free public schools, we just choose not to take advantage of it.

What you forget is that every dollar taken in salary is a dollar not available for the zedaka itself. Now I dont expect the bigshots to work for free, but I think we can all agree that $350,000.00 a year is a little excessive, especially when that money can go to feed poor children, widows, orphans and sick people.

$350,000 is only excessive if you live in KJ! That barely pais the mortgage and yeshiva tution for a heimishe family in Boro Park!
