Albany, NY - NY Senate Confusion Sidelines Gay Marriage Bill |
|

Democrat State Senators Hiram Monserrate (D-Queens) and Pedro Espada, Jr, (D-Bronx) are responsible for the senate shake up
The measure's prime Democratic sponsors, Sen. Thomas Duane and Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell of New York City, say the issue is too important to push during the political turmoil in a Senate split 31-31. Paterson and senators question the validity of the sessions in which neither side will allow the other a 32-senator quorum needed to vote.
"I would be very resistant to the Senate voting on it until it was crystal clear the vote was legal and our action would ultimately and unquestionably make it law in New York state," Duane said. "As I've said, I think it's a terrible idea to gamble with our civil rights."
"The Senate _ as it's currently operating _ would prevent it from being enacted," O'Donnell said. "How does that help anybody?"
Gov. David Paterson, who strongly supports a same-sex marriage law, removed same-sex marriage Thursday from his agenda items in the extraordinary session he has called.

Smart move. Whatever you think about the merits of this issue, its too important to be decided as part of this ongoing circus in Albany. We are entitled to know where each of our Senators stands on the issues based on its substance and moral implications and not based on trading their votes as part of some bizzare political charade.

Good. At least they won't be able to celebrate a victory during their parade. I hope this gay marriage bill is finally defeated. The parade reminds me each year about how liberal this society is. Imo such parades and gay marriage should not be allowed. If those people must do what they do, then at least it should be done in private, and not rubbed in the face of the rest of society.

Civil rights; what civil rights?
Civil rights means that every person should be equal under the law. How are gays not equal under the law as the law stands? Why does it have to be called marriage? If it is inheritance of each other which they want then nobody is stopping them from naming each other in their will. Can anyone please explain what exactly they want?

I guess they also want spouse health insurance benefits. What they really want though is public acknowledgement and approval of their gay lifestyles.

So why let them get away with calling it "civil rights"?
Regarding spouse health insurance, it has nothing to do with marriage. You can have family health insurance which has nothing to do with marriage; and also “group health insurance” which also has nothing to do with “marriage”.
