New York, NY - Just how dangerous is New York City? A new online tool from the New York Times is helping city dwellers find out.

The webpage is a mashup of Google Maps and homicide data collected from the New York Police Department, news accounts, court records and additional reporting.

The Times has mapped 3,402 homicides across all five city boroughs from 2003 to the present. The tool allows users to break down the murders by time, race, gender and age of the victim and perpetrator as well as the weapon used.

According to the Times’ analysis, Saturday nights in September in Brooklyn are the most dangerous, especially for men, who are more likely to be killed. Women are generally safer, but when they are victims, they generally know their killer.

The Bronx has the highest murder rate per capita in the city. Firearms are the weapon of choice.
