Trenton, NJ - Lawmakers have approved a measure that puts safety above the law when it comes to underage drinking.

The new bill grants immunity to any under 21 who has been drinking if that person calls police for another teen drinking too much and needs medical help. Police will not be able to prosecute either the person who called or the one sickened by alcohol.

The Senate and Assembly gave their approval, and the measure now heads to Gov. Jon S. Corzine.

Proponents say the bill would help save lives, since teens would not be scared to call for help.

One good thing about arresting these teens is that THEY WILL NEVER DO IT AGAIN>> But if the police cannot arrest them, at least guide them to counseling and community work.

it seems to me that you didn't understand the point of this law
the idea is that if the underage drinkers can't be arrested then they won't be scared to call the police thereby encouraging them to get (medical) help when needed

do you know how many teens have died from alcohol poisoning or suffocating in their own vomit because their friends were afraid to call for help? this bill will save lives, not to mention that witnessing, or going through alcohol poisoning is usually impetus enough to keep one from drinking recklessly (if at all) ever again.

I think it doesn't go far enough and should be extended to all the people at the party. There's no way someone will call if all his friends are going to be arrested even if he won't be.

You think that one arrest stops them cold? You wouldn't believe how many 'repeat customers' like these I get. Starts with underage drinking, and graduates to DWI & drugs.
