Brooklyn, NY - Payback Time, UFT Teaches Felder A Lesson |
|
Felder disclosed that union reps brazenly distributed cue cards with prepared questions that legislators were supposed to ask at the April hearing. Union witnesses got the softball questions. The tough queries went to administration officials.
So when the labor council last week released a list of 33 council members it was endorsing without screenings, Felder's name wasn't on it.
"It was because of the cheat sheets," said one source
Ten other incumbents were also blackballed. In some cases, the only apparent offense of the blackballed pols was not toeing the union line.
"To me, it's a badge of honor," Felder said. "I think a lot of the leadership in the unions are ripping off members for their own benefit, and I don't want to have anything to do with it."
Outgoing UFT president Randi Weingarten said the labor council process allows any individual union to request that a legislator be invited in for an interview before an endorsement.
"Different unions asked about different folks," she said. "The UFT never told the [labor council] anything about endorsing or not endorsing Simcha Felder."

it would be a bit hypocritical for the ultimate politician like Felder to get upset about a labor union acting "politically" and trying to lobby for their position.

You want to support teachers, give them presents. But unions operate by force and threats, and should be opposed.

Perhaps in the past , many teachers were Yidden, but presently there are very few. No one in their right mind has joined the ranks of NYC teachers for years. Gone are the days when the Board of Ed had to close on Rosh Hashona and Yom Kippur because the majority of teachers were Jewish.
Simcha's stand strengthens my resolve to support him.

If not for unions, you would still labor seven days a week, not being able to take off on Shabbat, child labor laws, not to mention every person who is paid by the hour has a direct benefit that the union helps to establish what a living wage in the community should be. I know some of you are infected with Millhouse; you need to get your head out of your rear.

I agree with Simcha Felder. The unions are thugs. But we yidden need to realize that when we align ourselves with the liberal Democrats, we get what we deserve, such as, union bosses controling politicians. We need to wake up, leave the Democratic plantation, and become more conservative. On issue after issue, the conservatives are usually more in line with our thinking. But... it means forsaking handouts and that might be the hardpart.

The days when the UFT was run by Albert Shanker who made a stand for Jewish teachers are long gone. I know several young Jewish women who became NYC teachers in the late 80s and early 90s who were driven from the job by farbissiner parents and school principals who were quaking in fear of the local school boards in each district. If you aren't well-connected, the UFT won't lift a finger to help you.

You are right to a point. The only problem is that unions don't know where to stop. Currently, they got what they wanted already years ago and now they only want to be able for the senior guys to play golf in their recreation preserves. So there you go
