Albany, NY - Today, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced that he would divest $86.2 million in New York State Common Retirement Fund (Fund) from nine specific companies which have businesses in Iran and Sudan. I commend him for his actions.

Faced with the stark realities of terrorism and genocide in these two countries, the Comptroller has acted wisely and prudently.

These two countries – on two continents – are very different, but the world’s goal for both of them is peace. Unfortunately, they do not share the same goal. Iran is led by a president who denies the Holocaust, has called for the destruction of Israel and is by most accounts actively seeking the nuclear capabilities to do so. Sudan has been ravaged by mass genocides in the Darfur region for the better part of this decade, and the world cannot stand idly by while people continue to die.

In light of the facts presented to him through rigorous research over the past several years, Comptroller DiNapoli did the right thing as the fiduciary representative of the State of New York and I thank him for his actions on behalf of all New Yorkers.
