Two other U.S. cities have such measures - San Francisco and Washington, D.C. A voter-approved effort to require it in Milwaukee was recently struck down by a judge who said it was unconstitutional.
Bloomberg said at a campaign forum Thursday evening that he cannot commit to the idea yet but says his staff is studying it.
He was speaking to the Working Families Party, whose endorsement he is trying to win in the mayoral race. Paid sick days are a priority for the group.

Even though there will probably be a limit to how many days one can get paid for being sick, those who do not use up those days when actually will call in sick for the maximum number of days and collect the money. Basically, it will be used as paid vacation by many. It looks like the mayor has barack obama fever. This socialist stupidity will kill buisness in New York, especially by the smaller vendors.

An employee who spells and writes like you does not deserve UNEARNED sick days. You don't deserve employment more demanding than pushing a broom!

Wow amazing you get sick and you want to still get paid? Be happy your employer still gives you your job when you get better. No wonder business are leaving this country, they are being taxed to death and forced to pay for no show jobs now? Might as well be in the business with the mafia.

As everyone knows, people come in to work when they are sick, and stay home when they are well.

if you dont work, why should you get paid? if you dont produce, then you dont earn. what is to stop someone from taking off when they are not sick? right now, at least there is a consequence. if this goes through, what is to stop people from taking advantage? i dont know about other people, but in the jobs i have had, i have always had a specified number of paid sick days. if you exceed that number, you take off without pay.

it's amazing how you people think. I've always worked in companies who provide sick days. Never have I used them to take vacation days. For that matter, I don't remember using more than one a year! (I have had 7 or more per year in each company).

Where I work we get an unlimited number of sick days.
When there was a specified number employees felt they had to "use them or lose them", an attitude the company didn't like. If all sick days were used up employees reported to work while they were sick, another attitude the company didn't like.
Supposedly every sick day an employee takes is recorded in a database and HR uses software to check if an employee is “calling in sick” every Monday, every day after a holiday, every Yom Tov and even every time a new Harry Potter volume was released.
If an employee takes too many sick days he/ she gets put on short term disability and has to justify the illness to the insurance company that was contracted to pay the benefits.
I haven’t heard any stories of employees abusing this system yet (doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened).

It's a great idea. People now go in sick to work and spread contagious illnesses. A limited number of sick days is humane.

The method of paying employees should be left to employers. As long as employers are not abusive there is no reason to mandate additional laws. The marketplace always has a place for workers to find employment that meets their needs, skils and abilities.

Actually.... the idea of getting paid for days you don't work is the more "communist" idea. No wonder you live in NY.

I can't believe I had to read 15 posts to find ONE that actually made sense.
Employers can choose to give sick days or not choose to give sick days just like any other "benefit". Since when should the government have any right to dictate company policies?
NY (and especially the city), is just a complete communist cesspool. Just sit back and watch more and more companies leave. We here in FL are happy to welcome them with little regulation and we don't tell them how to spend their own money.

So you will LIE in order to save vacation days? You're a real tzaddik.
