Alaska - Sarah Palin announced Friday she plans to resign as governor of Alaska in a few weeks, saying she will try to "affect positive change" from outside government.

Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate in 2008, made the surprise announcement at a press conference at her home in suburban Wasilla.

She said the decision has been "in the works" for a while and comes after "prayer and consideration" and discussions with her family.

She is handing the reins over to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in at the governor's picnic in Fairbanks on July 26. Parnell and most of Palin's cabinet and Palin's family were at the announcement.

"We know we can affect positive change outside government at this point in time on another scale and actually make a difference for our priorities," she said, adding that she was tired of what she described as "superficial, wasteful, political bloodsport."

Some have speculated in the past that Palin may be interested in running for president in 2012, but she did not mention running for another office at her press conference. Sources told NBC's Andrea Mitchell that Palin is out of politics for good.

Palin said she didn't want to be a "lame duck" politician.

“Many just accept that lame duck status and they hit the road. They draw a paycheck and they kind of milk it. I’m not going to put Alaskans through that. I promised efficiencies and effectiveness," she said.

Palin was elected Alaska's youngest and first woman governor in 2006 at age 42. She was the surprise pick of Arizona Sen. John McCain as running mate in the 2008 presidential election.

She was only the second woman to appear on a major party presidential ticket — Democrat Geraldine Ferraro was the first when she ran unsuccessfully for vice president with Walter Mondale in 1984.

I'm very disappointed, and I think this will harm her chances in 2012. I can only wonder whether someone in her family is sick. But nobody else has gone through what she and her family have done over the last year. Nobody in USA politics has been the target of such naked hatred since FDR, and even his critics had limits.

Her enemies hit on a very effective weapon - simply file dozens of ethics complaints against her, a new one every few weeks, and run up her legal bills. She is far from a rich woman, and half a million dollars in legal bills, with only the prospect of more to come if she remained in office, is not something many of us could face calmly. Those who file frivolous complaints should be forced to pay the defendant's costs. Because now there is nothing stopping anyone from doing this to anyone. If this is the real reason she felt the need to resign, then I hope every one of these complainants ends their lives bankrupt and sleeping in the gutter.

The same goes for all those who have orchestrated the most massive smear campaign seen in American history. The sheer number of separate libels hurled at her is mind-boggling. One blogger set out to collect the full list, and came up with over 80 separate allegations, each and every one without merit. And over the last few weeks we had John Kerry as much as publicly wishing her dead, and David Letterman targeting disgusting jokes, not just at her but at her 14-year-old and 18-year-old daughters. She may have the strength to stand up to that, but she's always allowed her family to vote on her career, and they didn't sign up for this sort of thing. Those responsible should all suffer at least as much as she did.

I just heard her brother say that she was spending 80% of her time defending herself against these ridiculous ethics complaints, and simply had no time to do the job of governor. Now I would have said that if the Alaskan people wanted a full-time governor they could change the law to prevent this sort of abuse, and that if she allowed the evil people to force her out of office they would just do it again to the next victim. But it's understandable that she has more regard for the Alaskan taxpayers than I do, and wanted to save them the money this circus was costing them, and let them have a governor who will have time to concentrate of the job, at least until the Dems start filing false claims against him.

It is remarkable that one of the biggest aspects to the 2008 election was the discussion of the qualification of Sarah Palin to be VP. Yet at the end of the day we ended up with the biggest buffoon on the planet as VP. Go figure.

“Look, John’s last-minute economic plan does nothing to tackle the No. 1 job facing the middle class, and it happens to be, as Barack says, a three-letter word: jobs. J-O-B-S.” - Joe Biden, Vice President of the United States.

Contract? What contract? Anyone has the right to resign their position at any time. No contract is implied in being elected; that's why there's a lieutenant governor. Do you think Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Ken Salazar, broke their contracts with their respective states when they resigned from the Senate to take up jobs in the executive branch? How about Tom Vilsack, Janet Napolitano, and Kathleen Sebelius, all of whom resigned from the governorship of their states to join the Obama administration?

Good for her...Get a talk show job like Oprah and laugh all the way to the bank. Or you can right some books like B. Hussein Obama or Shillary Clinton.

Imagine if the the press looked into Obama with 25% of the energy they spent on Palin. He never would have been elected. All you Obama loves can watch him, the Israeli Rahmbo and the Jew in name only, David Axelrod, sell out Israel.

Unnamed "sources", who may or may not exist, and may or may not have a clue what she's thinking, tell a network that hates her what that network wants to hear. There is no news value in this. Here's a hint, though: in her speech she quoted Douglas Macarthur. That's unlikely to be an accident.

Now that is just not fair.... I have plenty of reasons for not liking her... but I don't hate her.

1. She is not very smart, but pretends that she is.
2. She uses her femininity (ie. smile and wink, tight fitting leather clothes, etc) like a cheap floozy because she has nothing else going for her.
3. She is completely uneducated about the world (or even the USA) outside Alaska.
4. Asking what you read in order to keep up with current events is not a "loaded" or "trick" question. When you can't even FAKE it... it proves you are just a phony.
5. Being asked difficult questions about your plans and opinions as a politician is part of your job. You are a public servant, and as such you answer to the people. When you can't even get the basic questions answered, you are just a clown in a pretty dress.
6. She goes around the country preaching to others about how to raise their children right and she can't even keep her own house in order.... just another phony like Ted Haggert.

I have more, but I don't want to start being mean or getting personal.

I'm sure some loony here will say... "well Joe Biden is a bumbler too!"... yes... he is as well. I'm not a Democrat or a Republican.

I like my politicians well educated and well informed. Even if I disagree with their opinions, I can still respect them. Palin... Biden... Bush(41)... all just likable people with nothing behind the smile but hot air and a low IQ.

Lisa Murkowski she did issue a harsh rebuke, and a lot of Republicans said today that she resigned due to the fact she will commend a lot of money in writing her book and speeches, personally I don’t care if she makes money or runs in 2012 (which I hope she does, so we will have an easy win), but you as usual jumped to bogus conclusions and accusations.

Palin's detractors contend that she is shallow and uneducated -- an above poster implied that she lives in a "trailor park", which is an elite snobbish way of accusing her of supposedly being :"white trash." (By the way, besides being factually wrong, it's correctly spelled "trailer" park, Mr. Oh-so-superior.)

Yet, when this allegedly shallow and ignorant woman was confronted with an arrogant and corrupt governor of her own party (Frank Murkowski, who blatantly appointed his own daughter Lisa to fill out his unexpired U.S. Senate term, and who ordered an expensive jet plane for his office even though the Legisature had nixed it), Palin, just a local mayor at the time, called him out and criticized his arrogance and corruption, took him on and, against all odds, toppled him.

In contrast, did the wonderfully brainy and educated Obama ever publicly have a single negative thing to say about Governor Blagojevich BEFORE Hot Rod was hauled off in handcuffs by the FBI? No. In fact, not only did The Liberal Messiah do exactly NOTHING to expose this goniff and protect the voters of his state, the way Palin did, but as Rahm Emanuel had boasted -- again, BEFORE Blago was exposed as a corrupt weasel -- he and Obama played a key role in foisting the crook on the people of Illinois, not once, but in TWO separate elections. They had to have known Blago was a smarmy character -- but shilled for him anyway.

I'll go with Palin, with just her University of Idaho B.A. but with her inate common sense, over the smoothie Obama with his Harvard Law degree but no basic understanding of Right Versus Wrong, ANY DAY.

Besides, people are waking up to the obama and his foolishness. Its taking them time but when they see he is spending money that we will never have for things we never want or dont need, he is loosing all the people who didnt vote for him only because he be black.

It's very simple! Obviously she will be moving for next school year to the NorthEast. You cannot campaign and and solicit donations from the distance. And you cannot Govern from the distance. It's a 12+ hours trip from Alaska. A Governor does not have the option that the junior senator from Illoinois had, which was simply ignoring his Senate job.
So it was either resigning or not running. And she seems to have chosen to run. Get ready!

You are incorrect. President-elect Obama through his spokesperson called for Blagojevich to resign on December 10, 2008. Blagojevich was indicted April 2, 2009. Please retract and apologize for the motzi shem ra against the President (who was never a close political ally of Blagojevich).

The false ethics suits to which she is subject is another of the dirty tools that the corrupt Democrats use to discredit viable candidates. This is similar to the illegal investigation that was launched against Joe the Plumber by Jones-Kelly. There should be some legal protection and penalty for all these frivolous lawsuits.

She's smarter than you, buddy. And better educated. If you think she doesn't read you're not only ignorant but stupid.

When did she go around the country preaching to parents about how to raise their children? I must have missed that. Oops, no I didn't, because it never happened.

But if it had, what does that imply? What do you mean "she can't even keep her own house in order"? Is she supposed to be in total control of everything her children do? Keep them locked up whenever she hasn't got her eye on them? Do you control your children? Are you confident that your children will never do anything you don't approve of? So what do you want from her?

And what's so terrible anyway, that a naive girl believed her long-term boyfriend when he promised to marry her, and said that made it OK to jump the gun a bit? It happens all the time, to the best families. The main thing is not that it happened but how they dealt with it. They could have made it all go away quietly, and the temptation must have been great, but they did the right thing. Just as she did herself when she resisted the temptation to abort Trig. That showed courage and character, exactly what we need in a president.

It is ok, we Jews always had a few bad apples who supported Marxism, on the other extreme Hitler, and to a smaller extend Mussolini, now I am not equating Palin with any off the aforementioned, just to point out that some minute group of Jews find away to support some far rightwing nut or left wing loony and you are one off theses Jews.

Nobody in American politics, including Clinton, has ever been the subject of such a vicious and sustained smear campaign.

For more than 17 years, the Republicans have been attacking both Clintons, calling them murderers, communists, etc. How many right-wingers have made a lucrative career out of this? The criticism of Palin, which you characterize as "attacks", pale in comparison.

Can you imagine what would have happened had Chelsea Clinton been a teenaged unwed mother, like Palin's daughter? Or had Chelsea behaved like the Bush girls? Or if Chelsea had a girlfriend, such as Cheney's daughter has? I highly doubt that you would have leapt to her defense.

Despite what you may think, legitimate criticism of a presidential or vice presidential candidate is not only advisable, it is our obligation. When John McCain nominated Palin as V.P., questions were raised about her, as they had about McCain, Obama, or Biden. While you may not like to hear this, objections were also raised about her in Republican circles, regarding her views and qualifications.

Even some of my friends, who are staunchly Republican, could not bring themselves to vote for McCain because they did not think that Palin was qualified. The points that they brought up included the financial mess that Wasilla, Alaska, was left in, the fact that she had strong ties to a secessionist movement, and her lack of any foreign policy experience or basic knowledge. Any one of these would have been enough to disqualify her.

The only trash is you. It makes sense that you are one of the vicious mob who hate this woman for no reason at all.

There we go again, attacking people cos they have a different view than yours. Why is this Jewish commenter being called trash, just because he doesn't like Sara Palin? Did he insult you personally? You need to address your aggression.

Hitler was not "on the other extreme" from Marxism. And you can't say you're "not equating" her with any of the above, and then turn around and class a Jew who supports her with those "bad apples" who supported them. There is no reason for any Jew NOT to support her.

I would never equate somebody who only has vile views, with someone who actually perpetrated them i.e. Hitler, Stalin, ect, in my view you personally have vile views, nevertheless, I would never equate you with Hitler Y’S’V’ regardless your views, you are a Jew and I must love you as any other Jew, but I need to call you out, so other people are not following in your footstep

"did the wonderfully brainy and educated Obama ever publicly have a single negative thing to say about Governor Blagojevich BEFORE Hot Rod was hauled off in handcuffs by the FBI? No."

You are incorrect. President-elect Obama through his spokesperson called for Blagojevich to resign on December 10, 2008. Blagojevich was indicted April 2, 2009. Please retract and apologize for the motzi shem ra against the President (who was never a close political ally of Blagojevich).

Motzi shem ra is a special category of loshan hara referring to the telling of untruths -- but there is nothing untrue in that statement to which you object. It turns out that Blagojevich had been under investigation since at least 2005. You yourself say Obama called for the governor's resignation on Dec. 10 -- but before that, Blago was arrested on Dec. 9, and the Chicago Tribune had reported on Dec. 8 that he was the focus of a federal corruption probe.

And his corruption had been public knowledge as far back as Feb. 26, 2008, when the Chicago Tribune had reported that 1) a federal judge declared that Blago was the mysterious "Public Official A" named in court papers whom the convicted fixer Tony Rezko had been raising funds for [Rezko, of course, also had Obama ties], and 2) prosecutors had "alleged that Blagojevich told a former political operative now cooperating with federal authorities that he could steer contracts, legal work and investment banking their way in exchange for fundraising." So if even the general public knew as far back as February 26 the governor was dirty, (and it is logical to assume that a highly placed Chicago political insider like Obama must have surely heard rumors of this even before it hit the papers), why did Obama say nothing negative about him until the day AFTER he was arrested, months later? Why did the overly Obama-friendly news media not hold the presidential candidate's feet to the fire during the campaign to demand that he take a position on the the by-then apparent corruption of his state's governor, and explain his own ties to Blago, which go back to 2002?

And while Obama and Blago were never close and cuddly buddies, they moved in the same universe of Chicago Democratic politics, Obama and Rahm Emanuel had been close advisors in Blago's initial 2002 general gubernatorial race (Emanuel had even boasted of this in a New Yorker article last summer -- his later repudiation of the claim and saying he had "misspoke," ONLY after Blago's arrest, was an unconvincing bit of after-the-fact damage control on his boss' behalf), and Obama campaigned with Blago in his 2006 re-election, by which time "Hot Rod" had already come under federal scrutiny.

If, as some have suggested, Obama had long privately "distanced himself" from Blagojevich, pehaps sensing (correctly, as it turns out) that there was something very unsavory about him, but he still never said anything publicly to warn the public about him until AFTER the governor's Dec. 9 arrest -- perhaps for fear that making an enemy of Blago by denouncing him might hurt his own prospects for the U.S. Senate and, eventually, the presidency -- that does not exactly make Obama look like a profile in courage.

Boy are you naive and misinformed.
She is resigning because it has been one big headache for her and the state since she got back. So firstly, to remain as governor and to rack additional negative things for her opponents to hold against her in 2012 is silly, so she is just getting out.
Now she will be free to run around the country campaining with and for 2010 house and senate candidates (and gunernatorial) so she can run around and help them campaign and maybe win seats for republicans. That helps her exposure, success rate and sure up necessary campital (finaancially, popular and otehrwise) for her inevitable 2012 run. This is especially time convininent for her, now that her wild card opponent, Bernard Sanford has so terribly fallen from grace and will be out of the running in 2012. She can also now make alot of money giving her stump speech all over the country. Its too bad that so many have the "Obama Messiah" sundrome when it comes to Palin, cuz she really is just a pathetic imbecilling empty suit with a pretty face, funky glasses and a smart mouth.

You have been watching too much Letterman garbage.

In no way is Sarah Palin White trash and your using this argument proves your Liberal bias despite your protestations that you are a libertarian.

The rest of your arguments are tired rehashes of all the Liberal slander that the Leftist media has been spreading and that you have bought into wholesale.

Any time I have heard her speak on the Internet, she was intelligent and articulate and very knowledgeable. All the claims of low intelligence were fabricated from whole cloth by the Liberal MSM.

They keep on attacking her because they are afraid of her very credible and popular candidacy.

In any case, America will get what it deserves by whomever they chooses. We have to put our bitachon in Hashem and not in any political candidates.

I don't watch Letterman, and Sarah Palin IS white trash... right along with the likes of Pelosi, Bush(43), and all the other dummies out there whose pretty smiles got them into office. I am not a Republican or a Democrat there is plenty of pathetic white trash in both parties.

What did I say that is liberal slander?
She could not answer basic questions about the economy? True.
She could not name a single source of news that she reads? True.
When she doesn't know the answer she just acts cute and winks and smiles to gain the sympathy of the interviewer (think... say it aint so Joe)? TRUE
She dresses like a whore? True.
She used to attend a church (Lutchman Ministries) where the preacher believes there are demons walking among us who cast spells to make people have car accidents and only his special "potions" and such can get rid of them? TRUE.
She has attended and spoken at xian family values conferences to preach to parents about how to deal with adolescent issues in a "xian" way? TRUE

What about her is credible? She, with her sweet little smile, managed to oust a loathed governor from her own party? That happens all the time. It is real easy to win when you run against the corrupt guy everyone hates. I mean ALASKA just elected a DEMOCRAT to the Senate.

As for the false ethics suits, how do you know they are untrue? Do you have first hand knowledge of the acts in question? Do you personally know the people involved such that you have gotten first-hand accounts? I, as usual, will wait until the FACTS come out before judging... which is why I did not mention it in my prior post. It is so sad that you can't make real arguments so you just make up positions I don't even hold. You should be ashamed of yourself for that.

Secondly, how do you compare the ethics suit against Palin to the Joe the Plumber issue? Are you stupid, or do you just not understand the American system of government? Sarah Palin is a PUBLIC servant, and therefore her actions AS GOVERNOR are up for scrutiny at any time. The people of her state have the right to question ANY action she takes. The disgusting and illegal use of confidential information by Jones-Kelly is a grotesque abuse of power used to cause harm to a private citizen. However, it is not Jones-Kelly suing Joe the Plumber, it is Joe the Plumber suing Jones-Kelly. That IS his legal protection and he is taking full advantage of it as is his right, and I hope he takes her down.

Your misuse of the term white trash is evident in your reply. The common meaning of white trash is the stereotype of very poor, illiterate and morally questionable people some of which live in the Appalachians. People that you personally don't like and won't let slide because they are not protected minorities are what you incorrectly call white trash.

The source for much of your opinion is undoubtedly the very slanted MSM and the very biased interviews with Liberal news people that were set up for her by the McCain idiots.

She can speak to the economy very articulately and can easily best Obama and certainly Biden in this. Where did you get it that she can't?

It's good that she doesn't read the slanted and empty MSM. The Internet is a much more reliable source of news.

She dresses so modestly that some posters here thought she was Orthodox. The immodest dress accusation is from outer space. It has no relation to reality.

Her advocating xtian positions happens to be an advantage in these times where many politicians are atheists or advocates of the most radical Liberal anti religion agenda.

As for the phony ethics suits, this is just one source of the details of these 15 ludicrous suits that have all been dismissed http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2277980/posts The facts have come out why are you unaware of them?

There is a huge difference between public scrutiny and falsified and bogus law suits.

An ad hominem attack is the hallmark of someone that can't muster arguments for their cause. You would do better to inhibit this despicable practice.

You have some nerve to call Palin "a pathetic imbecilling empty suit." First, there is no such word as "imbecilling," using "imbecile" as a verb. Learn to speak the English language properly before you embarass yourself by posting here. And second, who is "Bernard Sanford"? I have heard of Bernard Madoff the swindler and Senator Bernard Sanders of Vermont, but I know of no "Bernard Sanford." By any chance, would that be the disgraced South Carolina governor (formerly considered a possible 2012 Republican candate) Mark Sanford (real name: Marshall Clement Sanford Jr.)? The man has dominated news coverage the past two weeks, and you still can't get his name right? But yet, you still have the chutzpah to say it's the governor of Alaska (who has worked her way up to a far more important position than you ever will ever occupy ) who is a "pathetic imbecilling empty suit."

Actually "white trash" has nothing to do with where one lives or how much money they make. They are generally people who are in the shallow end of IQ pool and actually revel in their own ignorance to the point of believing that everyone with an actual education and those who base their opinions on actual FACTS are somehow "elitists". They believe that their pathetic lives of ignorant bliss represent the "Real America". These include both the Limbaugh AND Franken crowds.... Intellectual MORONS who choose to celebrate their lack of intelligence and knowledge by putting down anyone with an IQ over 100. THAT is white trash. And yes, even that nimrod Pelosi fits that stereotype.
