New York, NY - Councilman: Retailers are Milking New Yorkers with $6 for a Gallon of Milk |
|
The Queens Democrat, a public-advocate candidate, said the state Department of Agriculture is failing to monitor the price of milk in the five boroughs, allowing prices to reach up to $6 a gallon in Manhattan.
A survey of milk prices in each borough found prices by the gallon ranging from $2.50 to $4.99 in The Bronx, $2.69 to $5.99 in Brooklyn, $2.89 to $4.50 in Queens, $2.89 to $3.99 on Staten Island, and $2.25 to $6 in Manhattan.
The prices reflect mainstream brands of regular milk sold in delis, supermarkets and bodegas, Gioia said.
The survey did not identify individual stores, and Gioia said he doesn't blame the retailers for the overpricing as much as the state agency.
The Agriculture Department is charged with regulating milk prices by setting limits on what merchants can charge. But he said department officials no longer list what the maximum prices are, leaving consumers exposed to gouging.
He called on the agency to resume publishing the threshold price - as well as post local average retail prices on the Web.
Officials with the department did not return calls yesterday.
Consumers can report suspected milk price-gouging by calling (518) 457-1772.
Retailers who want help on milk pricing can call (518) 457-5731.

While price gouging is a bad thing, enforcing a maximum price that can be charged might cause milk to become unavailable in some stores, or perhaps they might only stock special varieties of milk(organic, lactose reduced, etc.) that might not fall under the price controls. I have noticed that some stores have stopped selling regular eggs, and only sell free range or organic eggs. The answer to price gouging is competition, not price controls. I guess many stores might not make much on milk, or might even lose money selling milk after the losses on spoilage are factored in. I wonder which stores sell milk for under $3 a gallon? Are they warehouse clubs?

The regulated state price on milk is only for a gallon. They don't regulate a half-gallon. Now you know why cholov yisroel is NEVER sold in gallons.

Today's modern health standards (regulated by health organizations, such as the USDA) are intended to make sure that milk sold in stores labeled as "cows' milk" is 100% cows' milk. Therefore, most of the prominent gadolei yisorel follow the posek of Rav Moshe Feinstein, T'ZL, who, permit sthe use of regular cows' milk in the United States and other countries with equivalent pervasive government regulation. Other rabbonim provide a similiar heter when Cholov Yisroel is either not available or priced significantly higher. This is sometimes referred to as cholov stam, meaning "plain milk". On the other hand, there are still some ultra-machmir rabbonim who forbid the use of milk that is not cholov yisroel under any circumstances (except if you lived in a remote area, with no real practical way to obtain cholov yisroel milk, and if you needed to consume it for health purposes).

I've seen milk for less than $3 a gallon in MANY places. Of course with CY its more like $3 per half gallon of sour milk (or was it watered down milk) but thats another story/

You must be an owner of one of those companies selling $6/gallon "special halav yisroel" to naive yidden who have been brainwashed into thinking that they need to purchase special milk when a real gadol like rev moshe has said it is not necessary. Its like stealing from heimeshe families to make them think that halacha requires them to buy your "magic milk"

Rav Moshe ZT"L said many things about milk in America. He did not say one doesn't have to choose Chalav Yisrael if it is readily available. Please read/study his written halachic ruling yourself and don't rely on hear-say. I beleive it is a "day's travel" being the guideline how far one must go to obtain the Chalav Yisrael.

even i , who is makpid on cholov yishmael knows that you are completely incorrect about what the rosh yeshiva ztl said. I would suggest, before having to answer din v'cheshbon on your foolishness, that you go thru EACH & EVERY psak issued by Reb Moshe ztl on this issue. you may end up enlightened!

You leytzanim missed the whole point: the reason milk is so expensive in NY is becasue everyone is on Food Stamps and Govt. subsidies DRIVE UP THE PRICE OF THAT ITEM, including the rents, which are subsidized by Section 8. Get off govt. subsidies and live like proper menschen and PRICES WILL COME DOWN!

B"H, in my neighborhood where we strive to live like menschen, Costco charges $2.15 for a gallon of Chalav Stam milk. Unfortunately, the Chalav Yisroel drinkers have apparently not demonstrated the same menschlichkeit, as prices are 250-300% more.

costco also charges membership, and they also only sell in bulk. who needs 40 gallons of milk in their house?

.. AND with the 200% price differential, you will have made back your membership dues after 20 gallons of milk (around 15-20 weeks worth in my house)... and that is aside for all the rest of your savings :)

Sorry, just ONE gallon of milk at a time is necessary (though, you could buy 40 if you want). They do charge membership and perhaps a GALLON costs a little more elsewhere, but not a lot. That doesn't answer why Chalav Yisroel costs SO MUCH more (nor why it spoils so quickly).

No. This comment of his isn't too bad, but from his other comments over the course of time it's clear that he is not an orthodox Jew at all.

It only spoils so quickly if you buy it at stores that get deliveries at 3 or 4 in the morning, and don't put it in the fridge until 9 or 10 or 11.

Nope. He ruled that me'ikar hadin the commercial milk sold in stores is cholov yisroel, and that one may drink it lechatchila, even in the heart of Borough Park. He also ruled that a mehader bemitzvos, which everyone ought to be, should try not to rely on this psak, but the limit he placed on that was an extra expenditure of $100 a year. I don't know in what year's dollars that was expressed, though. For cheese he said that one needn't expend any extra money or effort on cholov yisroel.
Of course he is not the last word in halacha, and many don't agree with him, but this is what he held.
