Manhattan, NY - A Israeli army commander in town visiting family was injured when a pair of teenage hooligans threw rocks at her taxi as it cruised past the Upper East Side.

Gilat Raz, 41, was on the FDR headed to her brother's home in Queens around 9 p.m. last night when the neighborhood punks dropped a few rocks from an overpass near 71st Street -- with one striking the yellow cab's windshield.

The rock, which was larger than a fist, shattered the glass and shards of glass hit Raz above her left eye. Her sister and two kids who were also on board were not hurt.

"She was bleeding profusely from her head. There was so much blood," said witness Jonas Lieberman, who translated to cops and doctors for the non-English-speaking Raz.

She was treated and released at nearby New York Hospital.

"The size of the cut wasn't more than a centimeter, which is a miracle. The doctor said it wouldn't take more than two stitches," said Lieberman.

Witnesses who saw the kids throwing rocks off the overpass called authorities, and 20 minutes later, Ceasar Estrella, 16 and Bajram Taipi, 15, were busted hiding behind a black jeep on East 74th Street.

They were charged with reckless endangerment and assault.

Its really tragic that a soldier from the IDF who has probably risked his life on numerous occasions fighting terrorists and come out safely cannot be safe in NYC. This is a reminder of the randomness of life and why safety is all "relative".

And the fact that you referred to the commander (or "soldier") as a male is a reminder of the importance of actually reading the article before commenting on it.

They think that in America no one will throw stones at them, it isn't Hebron.
They think that no one would dare throw a stone at an Israeli army commander.

Just comes to show them!

I think the difference is that 99.99 percent of Americans would condemn these hoodlums for the stone throwing if they knew about it. How many Haredis are condeming the violence by some of the charedi protesters in Jerusalem?

How poetically just this would have been if she was a member of shalom achshav, those self rightous, self absobed, left wing whiners, that constantly lecture the IDF about disproportinate response to the Palistinian "youth" that hurl stones at Israeli motorists. as this story illustrates, under the right circumstances, a stone can maim or even kill, even if thrown by a child.

Touché! It is more of a chillul Hashem to throw rocks at people who may not know better. A large majority of the Israelis being mechalel Shabbos were raised in a frei atmosphere with zero religious upbringing. On the other hand the charedi rock throwers, the Torah observant, forgot the part of making a spectacle out of themselves and causing a chillul Hashem around the world.

Actually not. English is the most commonly spoken language on the planet thanks to 1 Billion Indians, 300 Million Americans, 200 Million Nigerans, Ghanians, Kenyans, Tanzanians, South Africans, Jamaicans, etc. Plus a few million Canadians, Austrailians, Irish, Scottish and of course the guys who started it all, The English.

You know... there is a chance this guy is just waxing grandiose. He may be blowing his significance out of proportion - we all know people who tend to do that. Don't jump to conclusions on wirds from an oiberchuchem.

99.99 percent Haredis are condemning the violence by some of the Haredi protesters.
As hard as it may be to believe it's actually a tiny percentage of Haredim who are doing these violent hooligan acts. It may seem like a big amount when you think of 100 or 200 or 500 people acting violently but it's really only a tiny percentage as the numbers of Haredim are ka"h very big.
Most of my family members in E"Y condemn these acts and are very Charedi.

Raz said "Only God knows how much worse it could have been," she said. "I'll go to the synagogue on Saturday to say [the Jewish Blessing of Thanksgiving]."

But the visit is now ruined with her daughter and 7-year-old son - who was not in the cab - pleading to go back home, she said.

Raz is considering leaving before her planned July 20 departure date.

"Listen, I love New York, but this changed something for me," Raz said. "I'm scared stiff right now."

It reveals part of her chest and undergarments. Yinglach shouldn't see blood or wounds? What is YOUR problem? Maybe the yinglach SHOULD see the blood and wounds. Maybe then they'd be less likely to throw rocks at other human beings.

I don’t understand what the hell the fact that this woman is a commander in the IDF has anything to do with the story. Did these stupid kids have some sort of Iranian intelligence that this uneducated slow Israeli woman who claims she can’t speak English, and who happens to be in the IDF will be traveling on the FDR, and that they should throw rocks at her. She was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time, and this has NOTHING to do with her personally. PEOPLE GET A LIFE.
