New York City - More than 200 miles of bike lanes have been added to New York City streets in the last three years, and officials plan to carve out still more space for cyclists.

Officials celebrated the 200-mile mark Wednesday in the Bronx.

A 2006 study found 225 cyclists were killed and nearly 3,500 hurt by cars in the city between 1996 and 2003. In response, the city pledged to expand its network of bike lanes on streets from 220 miles to 420 by this year.

The expansion includes a seven-block stretch of Manhattan's Ninth Avenue where a paved buffer zone and a lane of parked cars separate bikes from motor vehicles.

The city aims to have 1,800 miles of bikes lanes on streets, in parks and along paths by 2030. Plans call for adding 50 miles' worth each year.

This we should be proud of? These bicyclists do not obey traffic regulations and are involved in hit and runs all of the time (some bicyclist hit my mouth a few months back and just kept on riding). They are a danger to both pedestrians and drivers. Not to mention they are not snius types as evidenced but our brothers in Willy battling them to keep them and their immodest dress away from Torah True Bochrim and Bochurot. Get rid of the bike lanes, not add more of them!

Who needs bike lanes? Let's have car lanes!

Meaning - give the ikkar road to bikes and you can give a few lanes here and there to cars.

If you get rid of bike lanes, you will NOT get rid of bikers---they will just ride in car lanes and on the sidewalks. It's far better to have more areas that are off-limit to cars.

DUMB I would love to see satistics that these bike lanes saved lives.. In most cases these bike lanes are a nusiance. Im also willling to bet that in most of the bike acccidents cited in the article a bike would not have made a differance. eg a bike geting hit in a crosswalk. I would favor a manditory large sticker to be placed on the steering wheel or side mirror to remind drivers to look for a biker before opening the door.

Jul 09, 2009 at 08:43 AM opening doors without warning is dangerous Says:

Good idea re mandatory large stickers on car doors telling drivers to look before opening. Drivers swing open their doors suddenly all the time, without looking, without warning, and that is a serious threat to cyclists. In addition to drivers cutting off cyclists often, making turns in their paths, not signaling, etc. There needs to be greater crackdown on dangerous drivers.

Stop writing how many miles of bike lanes you added! Instead write how many miles of car lanes you took away? did you guys see the change on Empire Blvd? They changed it from a 2 lane per direction to one lane per direction! Say no to Bloomberg!
