Brooklyn, NY - Jewish Congressman Engaged to Muslim Woman |
|
A source close to the couple confirmed that Weiner, 44, proposed to Abedin, 33, over Memorial Day weekend.
No date's been set, but the power couple is "thrilled" about the upcoming nuptials, the source said.
So is another woman in Weiner's life.
"I think it's wonderful," the pol's mother, Fran, told the Daily News. "She's lovely. What more can I say?"
She said it wasn't clear how their wedding ceremony might accommodate the pair's different faiths. Weiner, a staunch defender of Israel in Congress, is Jewish; Abedin is Muslim.
"Anything that makes them happy," Fran Weiner said.
Weiner, who went public with the romance last spring after brushing off months of rumors, ran for mayor in 2005. He mulled running again this year, but ruled it out in May, claiming a desire to focus on Congress - and "build a family."
Abedin was born in Michigan to a Pakistani mother and an Indian father. She grew up in Saudi Arabia and attended college in the United States.
After interning in the First Lady's office in 1996, Abedin became a linchpin of Clinton's entourage, and was described by admirers as maintaining both her flawless couture and her calm in the throes of Clinton's presidential campaign.

However, you apparently didn't read what he said. He said that Judaism was a "self-centered, antiquated, soulless religion" which as a grossly unfair total condemnation of the religion and not a complaint about some practices.

If this doesn't bother you, then there is something seriously wrong in your approach. ”
You are right, that poster generalized in an extremely unfair way. Which is why I said I don't completely disagree with him; because I think some of the practices and ways that people are trying to run our religion are antiquated, self-centered, and soulless. My problem is the way everyone jumps on someone who points out a flaw or disagrees with the rest of the sheeple, the comment after mine, #67, a case in point. But yes, it is unfair to condemn the religion and people as a whole.

According to Islamic law, Abedin wouldn't be considered Muslim either as her father is Indian, because acc. to Muslim law the child is Muslim if the father is Muslim. However, it could be that Abedin's father is an Indian Muslim.

What have people got to do with it? Commenter #38 referred to "our self-centered, antiquated, soulless religion". That was not an unfair generalisation, it was a criticism of the Jewish religion, and he had no right to do that. Toras Hashem temimah. The Jewish religion is perfect, and nobody has the right to criticise any part of it. By doing so, commenter #38 showed himself not to be an adherent of the Jewish religion, in other words, a sheigetz.

I don't judge the matter by whether he is or is not jewish or whether she is or is not muslim. I don't agree with his politics. He is a political leader, there is no personal connection there for me, as I imagine there is not for most of you out there.
I say, stick to the facts. Look at his voting records and what he says and does. I probably would not vote for him because he is a democrat and I don't usually like democrats for various reasons.

Who cares? Anthony is a liberal democrat. His moral and political positions have nothing to do with Orthodox Judaism. When are Orthodox Jews going to start backing Republicans? It is time for us to completely turn our backs to the Democratic Party.

He is Jewish in name only, and she is Muslim in name only. It makes for good public relations to throw in the "religiosity" adjectives. But that is all it is adjectives.
This is all a huge publicity stunt. Remember Weiner wants to run for Mayor and NYC has a lot of Muslims. Jew well, they by and large don't care who he marries so they will vote for him anyway. Two years from now after a good roll in the hay, when Weenie wants a new shtupper they will be divorced. Any bets on that?
