New York - Convicted swindler Bernie Madoff is on his way to federal prison in Butner, NC, where he is sentenced to spend the next 150 years, CNBC has learned.

According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons Web site, the Butner facility houses a total of about 3,400 inmates.

Well-known inmates housed at Butner include Omar Abdel-Rahman, the terrorist known as the "Blind Sheik" who masterminded the 1993 World Trade Center bombing; former Adelphia Commmunications Chief Executive Officer John Rigas; former U.S. Naval Intelligence Analyst and convicted spy for Israel Jonathan Pollard; and former Colombo crime family boss Carmine Persico.

Ira Sorkin, Madoff's attorney, said last week that Madoff would not appeal the 150-year prison sentence he received for masterminding the largest ponzi scheme in history.

Madoff, 71, was sentenced on June 29 by U.S. District Court Judge Denny Chin to an effective life term and had the right to appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit in New York.

The disgraced financier has been jailed in a cell close to the Manhattan federal court where he pleaded guilty in March to criminal charges, including securities fraud, money laundering and perjury.

Madoff, who orchestrated a Ponzi scheme that bilked investors out of billions of dollars, should not expect plush digs, former federal prisoners say.

Madoff will find himself earning pennies a day sweeping floors, cleaning toilets or manning a stove in the prison kitchen. Like all prisoners, corrections officers will shine a light in his face twice in the middle of the night as part of six or seven daily checks.

"One of the most difficult things to deal with in prison is the reality that you are powerless," said Jonathan Richards, author of "Federal Prison - A Comprehensive Survival Guide," who served time in a Federal Medical Center, which is similar to a low-security prison. "Your whole life you basically eat when you want to eat, sleep when you want to sleep, wear what you want to wear. Then, suddenly, this daily freedom is taken away."

Although Madoff will likely have air conditioning when the weather demands it, nearly all of the perks of the high-life he's accustomed to will disappear, regardless of whether he is sent to a low or medium security prison.

On arrival at the federal lock-up, Madoff will quickly see for himself that designer soaps aren't among the items included in his prison-issued hygiene kit. Instead, he'll get a tiny bar of soap, a tooth brush, a comb and a razor.

"This bar of soap is like the size of a matchbook," said Larry Levine, the founder of Wall Street Prison Consultants, who spent 10 years in federal prison. "The razor -- you can barely shave with it."

The food will toe the line of edible, and his outdoor time will amount to pacing in an outdoor cage. His prison-issued khaki wardrobe won't make a fashion statement.

The chances of Madoff running his own investment club inside the prison are slim, but -- when he isn't working -- he should have plenty of time to read, write, exercise, and even network with other prisoners, if he chooses. Some inmates learn new skills like painting.

He can write and receive letters, make limited phone calls for 25 cents a minute, and it is possible he will have access to email, although his messages can be monitored.

Once Madoff is settled, his friends and family can visit, but conjugal visits are forbidden.

"You can hug, you can kiss, but they can't give you anything," said Levine, who served in high, medium, low and minimum security prisons. "You aren't permitted to go to the vending machine and get snacks yourself -- they have to get them for you. And before you know it, the visit is over."

It's ironic how Jonathon Pollard is in jail for over 20 years because he was oisek bitzurchei tzibbur and we hear so little about him and Madoff is going to the same prison for the opposite reasons.

No, you must be careful in what you do because we have mitzvos and stealing and lying are contrary to how a Jew is supposed ot behave (in theory) not because you are afraid of prison. Fear of prison is for goyim. Fear of Hashem is for Jews.

cuz that was twenty years ago, and this is now!
and BTW, what are the limits of Oisek Bitzarchei Tzibbur? if I steal and then I give the money for Charity, would I also be a Oisik Bitzarchei Tzibbur?! he stole US property, so do you have feelings for him? so you will say, that after all he is a Jew? then first have pity on the true torah Jews, and when you will finnish with them, you should start with Jonathan.
This applies to B Maddoff, as well. they both have nothing in common with the Torah, and still we have to think and look at them as Jews? of course after all they are Jews, and will recieve the punishment all Jews who act as non-Jews recieve, but first lets look on the Jews who do practice the laws of the Torah.

only because he did something for Israel, doesnt make him a Better Jew then someone who actually follows the Laws of the Torah.

Not everything that people sit for is wrong. There are a lot of laws that have nothing to do with Hashem's law.

Pollard doesn't have to "get" into religion. He's already there.

Even if it were true that he was going to Otisville, it would not be the Otisville camp that we have heard so much about. By Federal Law, one can only go to the camp if he is sentenced to less than 10 years. Based on his sentence, he must go to a medium to high security prison.

No he wasn't protecting Jewish lives even if he thought he is, no Jew was more protected just because his dirty work, and by the way the Israeli government is at fault that he is in jail, because he was already at safety in the Israeli embassy, and they just throwed him out like a dog, its already known that the Israelis where never loyal to their spys.

It's true that the Israelis handed him over, and those responsible for that decision will never be forgiven. But what does that have to do with the value of the information he gave Israel? He was protecting yidden, and that is the biggest mitzvah one can do. When your supervisor tells you not to inform the Israelis about Saddam Hussein's poison gas development, because "Jews are sensitive about gas", every Jew should know what to do.

silly you! how can you compare Sadamms poison gas to spying on a friendly and helpfull friend?

he was a criminal by all means. and he didnt do it for the Mitzvah, since he should have first started with more simple Mitzvos.

and BTW, he didnt 'get' into yiidishkeit, he only did it to gain our attention. what inspired him all of the sudden?

only because your so pro Zionist, is enough of a reason to keep you in the fog, and raise his name on each oppertunity.
there are much more torah fearing Jews that caught up in jail for some mistake they have done, only because they didnt help pursue the Zionist agenda, is a reason they arent remembered?

I wish every Jew, Including Jonathan, to be freed!

You idiot. What do you think I'm talking about with the poison gas? Who do you think was told by his supervisor not to tell Israel about it because "Jews are sensitive about gas"?
