Mea Shearim - A Jerusalem resident was arrested for suspicion of starving her two-year-old son.

The toddler, who had reached a weight of only seven kilos (about 15 pounds), is hospitalized at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in serious condition.

During a Jerusalem Magistrates’ Court hearing on the extension of the woman’s remand, Judge Alexander Ron called the affair “the worst of the worst.”
It is suspected that the woman, who is not cooperating with investigators, suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a psychiatric disorder wherein those affected abuse someone else, typically a child, in order to draw attention or sympathy to themselves.

During the court hearing it was revealed that the child was hospitalized for the first time at Hadassah Mount Scopus Hospital in September 2007 when he was only a year and seven months old with a fever and inflammed oral wounds. He refused to eat or drink and vomited. The toddler was released after two days and has since been admitted to the hospital on seven different occasions. He was transferred to Hadassah Ein Kerem in February 2009 and has been there ever since. Apart from malnutrition, the toddler also suffers from hair loss.
The suspecting medical staff at Hadassah Ein Kerem installed security cameras in the child’s room. To their horror, the footage showed the woman disconnecting her son from his feeding tube. In other cases, she poured unknown substances into the tube.
The hospital proceeded to inform welfare authorities at the Jerusalem Municipality of the case. Police initially asked to arrest the mother at the hospital, but the hospital’s management would not allow it. She was eventually detained during a meeting with a social worker.

It was later revealed that the woman is a member of the Neturei Karta community. She has other children and is currently pregnant. Hospital officials said there was an improvement in the toddler’s condition since the mother’s arrest and that he is able to eat without the use of a feeding tube. They said he is not vomiting.

On Thursday the municipal welfare office, located near the Jerusalem’s Ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood was set on fire in protest of the woman’s arrest. No suspects have been detained as of yet, but police investigators said they knew who was behind the act.

It is terrible what the need for attention can bring people to do. If positive attention won't do, they will resort to negative attention.
I feel sorry for the mother. Obviously her needs were not met as a child.
She must be in terrible emotional pain for her to resort to hurting her innocent child. Does she have friends? Are her neighbors nice to her? I wish I would know the whole picture.
How about classifying being a part of the Neturei Kartai a psychiatric disorder? Isn't this another way of seeking negative attention?

Well it is a problem when a sect lives in anarchy in a country they don't recognize. Who deals with their mentaly unstable minority?
I guess they must get some Neturei Karta people to deal with her, if they have anyone balanced enough to do so. The Eida isn't kosher enough for them.
What a sad story.
Let us pray for the born & unborn kids, & the very sick mother, I guess her husband isn't to well either, at most he too is suferring.
May HAKB"H help them & all of us.

We should not use this one case to generalize for a whole community but one does wonder how many more of these cases occur when their leaders promote every mother to have at least 12 children and avoid using birth control. Hopefully, the court will put in place some system to detect possible abuse cases earlier and before god forbid there are tragic consequences. Again, this is not an issue where rabbonim have competence to diagnose and treat.

While I agree with you that that measures need to be taken against this mother,
the first part of your comment exposes you for what your worth.
This woman clearly has a problem and it is unrelated to promoting the non use of birth control. Any rav that sees a woman having issues dealing with her children would allow her to take approriate measures.
BTW your great grandmothers didn't use birth control either.

The point was more general than THIS family; if you have 12 children in a family, there a much less liklihood that any problems with an indiviual child will be quickly identified and addressed....they are NOT talking about THIS particular family and it is understood that THIS mother had a specific mental illness.

The woman is very, very ill. But the community is worse, because rather than acknowledge it, they will burn an office to detract from the fact that this woman, who is part of their "cult", is sick. They would rather protect their reputations than protect a child. It's truly unbelievable. I would be that this woman either isolated herself or her family isolated her so that no-one would know what she was doing. In terms of this possibly being the only child in her family that she did this to; sometimes for whatever reason, a parent chooses one child as the "identified patient." Maybe she had post partum depression with him, or maybe something else was going on in her life when he was born. Maybe...just maybe... she is feeling that she can't deal with so many children one right after the other and since she can't possibly say this, she acts on it instead.

There seems to be a serious problem with the transmission of information in the chareidi world in general and with Neturey karta in particular.

How come they always assume the "zionis regime" is out to get them? It was the same when a father shook a baby to death: chareidim protest in a reflex saying: "He is one of ours, so he has to be innocent".

How come they are not capable of hearing the information completely first, investigating if necessary and judging/rioting then?

If she is indeed suffering from that disease, they better take that child for always. Those cases (you can look this up) usually end in death for the child (even after "rehabilitation") and in the cases where there are other children, they eventually also "die" from other reasons. She needs help? Fine, give her help. But don't endanger that child again.

There is a video tape record of her interfering with her child's treatment. There is no doubt whatever that she did what they say she did. That being said, the woman has a psychiatric condition. She could be considered an ohnus to her illness.

I personally know this “ehrliche” nice women and her well-known prestigious family, the whole thing here is a wild “Bilbul” made against ehrliche-yidden that is going on since the Zionist so-called state exist.

Everybody has learned it again and again, how this “reshoim” are trying as many times as they could, finding “Bilbulim” on ehrliche-yidden as much as they can. And the story here is clearly, as they write: “It was later revealed that the woman is a member of the Neturei Karta community. now they found “nebach” a mother of many children with a sick child that is already suffering eight month in the hospital, they can take the right “Nekomo”, and specially, if she’s an anti-zionist.

And everybody is believing their story, that a frum mother from “mea-sheorim” with that many children, is willing to kill her child, by pulling out a feeding tube, like you hear it by the monsters in harlem, after sitting by her hospital bed eight month. Her goal is only to kill her child.

Of course, they are not telling the whole story, this child was hospitalized eight month ago the child didn’t eat well and was loosing weight, they diagnosed her with cancer r”l, and treated her with chemo therapy, now they found out that it’s not cancer. (most probably, this whole story is a cover-up, not to focus on them, for un-diagnosing right and treating her many month with chemo.)

Right from the beginning on, they tried very hard to create a “child-abuse” case, but never got anywhere, therefore, the relationship between the mother and the nurses were always very rough, lately, she realized a hidden camera in the room, she had suspicious that something is cooking, the were looking on her with “seven-eyes” but what could she do.

Unfortunately, the long-awaited time came up, as it can happen many times, a child moves from side to side, one tube slipped out of the child, they ran in with such a “simcha”, that they finally caught her. She wants’ to kill her child…. They said “we are already watching you several weeks on the hidden TV, now we got you.” …….

They didn’t even want to hear her reply, the entire hospital staff was suddenly there, laughing of her as she was crying, it was clearly seen, as a “Bilbul”, like the old type in the nebach’dige Yiddish villages.

They arrested her as a real murderer, throwing her in jail with the worst man-kind possible, she is already sitting there since last week Wednesday. Even the husband was arrested for two days and was released on $50.000. bail.

Wake up yidden, whom do you really believe, this “Reshoim” where it never stopped “Rishos” from them, their whole goal is to stop yidden from keeping the torah. Or a ehrliche-yiddishe women who is nebach sitting with her sick child waiting to take her home gezunterheit, yes, this women wants to kill her child, but, this reshoim they are the Rachmonim, they couldn’t see how this mother murders her child. The problem with them is that they not seem to give the police's hypothesis a fair chance. Let the rabbonim and the police investigate. But I have the impression that the Rabbonim, who according to you, called the protest reason something along the lines "It cannot be because it should not be"...

I sureley dont know know if there is any truth to your whole story. but one thing for sure, the Zionists hate us (orthodox..) its no news. read Ben Hechts book.. and there is a second thing, that Hashem planted a natrual instinct in all living creatures to protect their Children.
so now add up these two things, it sure makes a lot of sence what you said.
The Zionists have a long history of Evil doing, much beyond of what you are accusing them of having done. they have stolen Yemeneit Children from their Parents. Made outopsies (not sure about the spelling..) that were completley unnecesary, so how in the world can we trust them with such a false accusation.
and there is one more thing, that since this family lives in Meah Shiarim, that means that there are around a hundred of other family's that know exactly what was going on in this Family's house, so how come no one did anything to stop them?

A Yid Says:

They would have shot to death R”L all the chareidim in mea-sheorim, HL”S if they could have.

listen maybe you are right. still i think its a need to teach mothers fathers how to behave mit a child. some of them leave the child crying for hr. some don'y know how to talk .hashem made the kid should cry when something is missing from him . the posik

If she indeed suffers from a disorder, she should be treated as a mental case and not be jailed. Her child needs to be placed in proper care. The fact that she is from Neturei Karta is irrelevant. Even if she was frei, it would be irrelevant. Children have to be protected from mentally ill mothers no matter what they're affiliated with.

What you say does not contradict the Munchhause syndrome by proxy theory.
It would look exactely the way you describe it.

So again the Rabbonim are the problem, Gross man.

I waited until now with an open mind. I still don't know enough to comment; only that people love to believe what they want to believe, and will not give another human being a fair shake. If it’s printed black on white, then it must be true. If I don't like their ideology, then it surely must be true.

"only that people love to believe what they want to believe, and will not give another human being a fair shake."

This exactely applies to the thugs who went and burned the social welfare office...

I have an open mind. It might be that the child had cancer (although one article explicitely states that the doctors checked him and found no illness), it might be that the case is more complicated than the newspaper story reports. It is true that there are some open questions. This is why I wanted to hear your side of the story.
I am aware that newspapers also tend to give a one-sided and emotional picture of the situation.

However, I did not act on my judgement. So, under the bottom line, it is irrelevant for the whole story whether I believe commentar 44 or the original post or I try to find a story that could match both descriptions.

Those who burnt the social welfare office also took their stance upon hearsay. They had no more possibility of proper investigation than I have. And still they made up their mind, they judged, and they decided to break the law as a consequence of their conclusion.

Do you think the rabbonim would call a protest, if they would know that the woman is at fault?

I don't care where the story is made up in. but yes I do believe that not necessarily was the protest called by rabbonim and if yes it makes sense the same way rabbonim are covering up for molestors

Isn't this another way of seeking negative attention?

your comment shows that either you're dumb, ignoramous or sick. how can you question about her friends they are part of the sick group who feel it is right to torture their kids. this group should not be allowed to continue their sickening ways and the women should not have children.

If what you are saying is true, then instead of burning tires, they must call a investigative journalist to do a story.

Living in a socialist country and having experienced first hand socialized health care, which completely strips away patients rights, I can believe this story.

If this woman truly has a child who could not keep food down, and the doctors misdiagnosed it and gave the overtreated the child, they would want to cover that up and point the blame on the mother.

In addition, if the mother has a hard time expressing herself and is emotional, they can diagnose her with any psychiatric condition and get away with it.

So, let s not jump the gun and judge this poor woman. Either case, though, I fail to understand the tire burning, yelling protestors. They shame me.

Munchausen syndrome by proxy is well documented in many abuse and and infanticide cases. However the profile differs very differently from the case in point. It is very unusual for a woman to have several well fed, well cared for children and then poick one to abuse. Even if she decided to pick on the new one, there would be a history of illness (abuse) of the last child that stopped with the birth of the new one. In any case, if the woman is mentally ill she should be treated for her illness. Incarceration alone will not help her.

To those of you who are really concerned. (Especially those who don’t jump to conclusions before hearing what really happened.)

I personally know the mother -she’s a woman everyone would wish to have her as a mother- and the family. And I’m following this story for over a year now. The story in short is as follows, at the age of 1 the child got sick. He had fever, couldn’t keep food down etc. so on the advice of Dr. Floris Levy, a pediatric emergency medicine specialist at Hadassah Medical Center -whom she highly trusted- he was hospitalized In the Hadassah ein-kerem medical center where he was (wrongly) diagnosed with cancer by Dr. Michael Weintraub and Dr. Memet Aker under whose “care” he is until now.

As time went by and as the child received chemo therapy (for no good reason) and no turn for the better the mother started to smell that some thing isn’t right. But was brainwashed by the doctors that they are doing everything for the child’s welfare. But as more time went by and still no improvement in the child’s condition. The mother smelled that something is fishy and started to question the doctors. That’s when one of the doctors mistakenly slipped out that the child was misdiagnosed.

The parents were warned not to tell anybody and not listen to anybody’s advice. But even though, the doctors being afraid that the parents will open a malpractice case against them and the hospital. They preemptively counter accused them and opened up this child abuse case against the mother. And created this exotic condition that the mother never had and b’ezras hashem will never have.

Now how about as another view on the story.

p.s. she wasn’t arrested in the welfare office she was arrested in the middle of the street as the biggest criminal or worse and is kept so as well (without bail, kosher food, visitation rights, etc.) even though she is no threat to anyone.

p.p.s. I don’t think her religious belief or organizational affiliation make any difference or even belong in the story.

I guess that I may have erred saying the mother is very sick, after reading comments & having family in E"Y, I am aware of how careful, a chareidi has to be when, bringing an infant to hospital.
i also know that no media could be trusted.

1.Which Rabbonim called the protest? Which gadol paskened that it is a mitzva to set fires, antagonize the police, and create a media circus of chillul Hashem? Which Rav came along and led the descent into madness?

2. At this point NO ONE knows to what degree the woman is at fault; the facts remain unclear, but certainly there exists sufficient suspicion to investigate on behalf of the child's interests. Why would anyone thwart such an investigation? Does our hatred of Zionists and our cynicism toward the Israeli media exceed our concern for the child?

Everyone read #66, I am shocked how so many so called frum yidden automatically believe everything written in the secular media, do you know how many times authoities and respectable media outlets have deliberately distorted the facts for their benefit. If what number #66 wrote is true which makes much sense, imagine the torture this woman and her family are going through. This is not the first time someone in Mea Shearim has been arrested, and there have not been any protests when guilt was clear (such as a case not so long ago of an uncle molesting his nephew while the parents knew and did nothing about, the parents were arrested and there was no protest) which proves that there is more to the story then is reported in the secular media.

Burning the social welfare office is inexcusable. Full Stop.

And as far as the medine is concerned, I agree with Reb Amram Bloy ZYA, who would never have done or condoned such a thing either.

If the woman is mentally ill then she needs to be treated. If there was blatant malpractice by the hospital then this can be investigated and detected as it was in several high profile cases that recently led to the imprisonment of a couple of incompetent, undertrained and corrupt doctors from the FSU in EY.

But wanton violence and destruction is completely inexcusable, no matter the reason.

You are assuming that the story is true. It is VERY possible that this woman has been trying to undercover her childs, the doctors misdiagnosed and treated it improperly. As a result, she may emotional, platzing, and they are labeling her as insane, when she is in fact protecting her child from possible medical negligence.

For those who have the misfortune of living in a country with socialized medicine, where the SYSTEM is protected instead of the individual, you can understand the story. In a socialist system, there is a lack of accountability, lack of transparency and many misdiagnosis that go unchecked. So, before WE diagnose this woman with mental illness, let us give her the benefit of the doubt.

(That being said, it is tempting and even understandable to diagnose with mental illness those who are defended by stone throwing, garbage burning thugs...)

In essence, there are two stories here:1) A medical mystery: Misdiagnosis or Abuse? and 2)the usual penchant for violent demonstrations by bored, Charedi kids, who are giving us all a black eye.

Lets not mix the two up. Just because someone belongs to the extremist Neturei Karta does not equal that that they abuse their child. Let's be intellectually honest here and not let our personal (and understandable) bias against the Neturei karta color the truth of what happened here. And what may VERY well be the true story is medical incompetence and a cover up, by the Medical Establishment and NOT by the Mom.

There was a mother who was also caring for her child in the same hospital and reported this charedi's mother's strange behavior. She felt that the child was in danger. She reported that it took the hospital a year to react. (This was in a
Jerusalem forum on the Jerusalem Post article.) In this particular psychiatric maladi the mother singles out one child and negatively affects him enough to merit medical attention.

The evidence does speak for itself that the child is now thriving and more healthy. And another thing: why is the mother covering her face if she is innocent. I never realized how extreme these groups were in living in an "us and them", "us-the righteous" and "them-the dirty Zionists" framework. And yet from the Zionist enemy they receive social services, bituach leumi payments, paved roads, all from people who get educated and work for living and pay taxes.
This woman and her husband need some accountability. They don't need to be coddled by their own religious community...but of course pride, being so powerful, will undoubtedly triumph.
