Stop being a wet blanket....VIN ran a story last week from one of the great rabbonim and poskim saying it was MUTAR to listen to such singing without musical instrumentation. Go hakkin a'chinik on a differnt board (unless your posek told you that hakkin a'chinik is also assur during the 3 weeks).

it's not so simple that you should be on the internet in the first place, why don't you go ask your rav first if being online is ok, then we can worry about music.

For many of us, music can set the mood of sadness and avaylus in a way that nothing else can....some of the most mournful nigunim help us think about the churban and then allow us to anticipate the coming of moshiach...I've just circulated several LIPA downloads to all my chevrah to listen to later when they get home

Maybe next year we can have a competition of "music for the 3 weeks" and people can post links to the best listening music for tisha ba'av.

Exercise music is especially appropriate for the 3 weeks since it clearly is not meant for musical enjoyment but rather helps us exercise and clear our heads for learning and and contemplation of chruban bais hamikdash.

Azoy...I have a difficult time understanding how you feel that listening to Richard Simmons "Sweating to the Oldies" and other music of that vintage helps to put you in the mood for "contemplation of chruban bais hamikdash.” Perhaps you are talking about a different "bais hamikdash" than the rest of us.

Actually, I was being facetious but the readership here can sometimes be very serious (and gullible). I'm still skeptical about music at all during the 3 weeks.

to #21, anonymous: who says "exercise music" = "sweating with the oldies"??? There are many, many jewish and heimish exercise CDs out. I go to a Chassidish exercise class, and we were told we can listen to these songs, to provide a beat for the exercises, but it's best to turn it off for the stretching part at the end. No music at all during 9 days. Obviously, everyone needs to ask their own Rav, but if i's good enough for these ladies...
PS. My 2 cents: My Rav said, regarding acapella music during Sefira and 3 weeks, "if it sounds like music, if it makes you fell like it's music, then it IS music!"

This situation is very similar to when Shwekey came out with the song "Birshus" and it was the exact same song as the classic "Tov Lehodos" originally sung by the SHalheves Boys Choir and also recorded by Avrumi Flam.

that song is nothing like carlebach. Rabbi Chait's songs were his own original compositions, just like carlebachs were his own original compositions.

Maybe we can use a different word. I know A Capella means no instrument accompaniment, but it originally meant "as in the Chapel" or church. So, maybe we can gradually change over to call is "voice only" music?

ah... the beauty of the Internet... we can ask online, or search Google for the one Rov who is matir something, then we become his disciple for the day.

Or, we can follow our rabbonim like a Chinese menu. We list some rabbis on column A others on column B. And we pick and choose as we see fit per inyan.

It is very convenient. According to one rov, It is not mutar to eat chazir. So, now I can have pork chops, and bacon. (this is a rather new psak, only a few years old)

According to another rov, I can ean on 17 Tammuz if I make a siyum. According to another rov, it does not have to be a mashechta of gemara, but any sefer/book. So, last week, I made a siyum on The Cat In The Hat and ate a delicious pork chop.

According to one rov, Kol B'Isha does not count if it is amplified electronically. Well, Lady GaGa's CD's are mutar now... and since she uses strong amplifiers, I could go to her concerts.
And, if amplified music does not count, then music on a CD is mutar during the 3 weeks, so I can listen to Love Game while I drive to the Diner for my bacon and eggs.

The Internet is sooo kewl. Thank you rabbis for your great heterim.

(for those lacking a sense of humor: this was not meant seriously, rather to poke fun at the heter seekers)
