Queens, NY - DHS Workers Accused of Stealing From Luggage At JFK |
|
The employees were identified as Brian Burton, 28, a seven-year veteran Transportation Safety Administration officer and Antwon Simmons, 26, a Aviation Safeguard Employee.
The duo came under suspicion after investigators at the Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General determined that they were working on days when items were reported missing from Delta Airline flight bags over the past six months.
During an "integrity test" yesterday morning, investigators sent a luggage bag down a conveyor belt where the two men were working and and watched as they lifted the laptop and iPod from the bag, and then ripped off the destination tag and sent it on its way.
The twosome were handcuffed and held for questioning by the Port Authority police, pending their transfer into the hands of the Queens DA, who is expected to arraign them on grand larceny charges.

Well! I feel a lot safer now. The TSA can't even keep crooks out of their own organizaion. How can they be expected to keep bad guys off of airplanes.

a couple of years ago, a security agent told me my carry on was too big (it was not) but I took out my Talis and Tefillin, and let her gate check it, because we were already running late. you should have seen the look on her face-- i have no doubt she wanted to "lighten" my load, and with the only valuables out, .....

Why don't they simply monitor the baggage area with cameras all of the time?

These are just a few rogue and misguided TSA security officers. Most are generally honest, although not all that energetic and intelligent when it comes to spotting potential security risks.

I despise the TSA. One of Bush's biggest mistakes was making the TSA a government-run institution.

Actually, some airports do monitor all baggage checking areas with cameras. MSP is well watched, but things will always happen. A few years back the same thing happened in Detroit. Two TSA employees tried to sell a laptop from someone's luggage to an Airport Police officer. The best and the brightest don't work for TSA, I guess.

Every two years or so they have a dumb report showing how they caught people on video stealing from airline luggage. What absolute nonsense!
Each time they make believe like they suddenly have a big sting. Really, they keep ignoring the past lessons, time and time again. The same crimes are repeated and the police always react later and devise a surveillance ploy, instead of anticipating the crime all along from old lessons.

The TSA doesn't protect us from terrorists. They only harass us. In Eretz Yisroel going back to the USA, they are much easier going and I don't think there is any more danger from terrorists because of it.

The authorities tried installing cameras to monitor the workers, but then the workers stole the cameras.
