New Jersey - State child welfare officials and car dealers this summer plan to to promote the "Not Even For a Minute" campaign, urging adults not to leave child alone in hot vehicles.

A child left alone in a vehicle, even for a short time, is in danger of abduction, injury, dehydration and even death. Approximately 40 children die each year in the United States, and hundreds more are injured after being left unattended in a vehicle, according to a study published by Pediatrics, the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The temperature inside a car can rise as much as 19 degrees in just 10 minutes, the study noted. One child died in New Jersey after being left in a hot vehicle last summer.

"We are reminding parents that an unspeakable tragedy can happen in a manner of minutes," said Kimberly Ricketts, commissioner of the Department of Children and Families who launched the public affairs campaign from Miller Buick Pontiac GMC dealership in Woodbridge. "No matter how busy caregivers get, they must never leave a child in a vehicle without a parent or caregiver."

The department and the New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers plan to to spread the word, and more than 90 dealerships said they will participate by distributing posters, visor cards, and car window stickers in both English and Spanish.

just because its done all the time does not mean that it is right or safe. Hashem gave us something precious when He gave us our children. the least we can do is treat them that way. people also leave their children alone in the car while they run in to get something from the store....does that make it right?

i agree....its disgusting that so many stores don't allow you to bring in the carriage....even when it isn't busy...i usually just tell them ...i will shop somewhere else,,, the funny part is that these stores are located in areas where ppl have lots of kids Baruch Hashem.

it is a problem that needs mutual cooperation between a couple of friends--e.g. one shops while the other watches two groups of kids, and then switch off. it is just as hard to watch your kids while shopping and find a place for the carriage. no easy solutions, but try your best

Common sense is not very common.

Let’s ask our officials in New York to start a campaign here too. Every human being is prone to “Shikcha” (forgetfulness), and only a zero tolerance can stop it. If you see someone doing it, do him or her a favor and admonish them.

I wish it would become more "normal" to wear babies in baby carriers. No one in Williamsburg does that!

Although I do not live in an area where strollers are left outside of stores, I did use a baby carrier for my infant when I also had a toddler and other children (I would then put my toddler in a shopping cart or umbrella stroller, depending on the type of store). I did not see anyone else doing this, but I found this was the best way for me to manage an infant & toddler simultaneously. And I am more concerned about what's best for my kids than about what's "normal".

I have a question: I have never shopped in BP, but why do these stores not allow strollers? Are the store aisles too narrow to accomodate them? If so, wouldn't an umbrella stroller fit, if the child is too large to wear?

Its not fair to say that this happens because lack of common sense. Many deaths were because the child was left by mistake, which is very common.

it is almost impossible to go by this rule when you have multiples who are not walking yet. it takes a couple of minutes to take each child out. talking from experience.

How I take care of my own kids is no one else's business. Soon maybe they will start telling everyone which foods we can't feed our kinderlech?! You take care of your kids and I'll take care of mine. In a few years we will see who did a better job!

believe it or not, last year in France it happened a mother forgot her baby in her car, in summer, the baby was dead, all medias and people talked about this, the same week another person did the same and left the baby in the car... there was a campaing starting about this.... and not enough because a man, a pharmacist, left his baby in the car too... it happened for 3 or 4 babies within 2 weeks...
People are just unconscious and think "it won't happen to me"... until it's too late

I'll agree with any suggestion involving voluntary action by private citizens, such as reminding and admonishing. I am against any government sponsored solutions. This is not the governments role. Also, with the exception of fighting wars, paving streets, and law enforcement, it's hard to think of anything that government does better than private citizens.

leaving a baby in a hot car is just thinning the heard. Having a baby sit in your lap while in a car is just a baby air bag. A child under 3 can protect a parent from most minor crashes. Larger children can be attached to the front and back bumpers too. Couples desiring children can find many nice ones parked outside Bakeries in Brooklyn. Some even come with fine strollers and full changing bags. Just a thought.

Jul 15, 2009 at 02:11 PM The Truth Says:

1) Just because people leave carriages outside stores in BP, does NOT mean it is safe to do it. It HAS happened that kids in strollers have gone missing.

2) Some stores in BP do not allow carriages inside as it would A) mean that there would be 20 strollers in there at once with no room to shop, B) 30-40 babies / toddlers in the shop maing it even harder for people to shop.

3) " Approximately 40 children die each year in the United States, and hundreds more are injured after being left unattended in a vehicle" - It happens plenty of times, hopefully this awareness will remind people that they are human and can forget things sometimes.
