Ulster Heights, NY - The proprietors of Camp Yeshiva Meor Hatalmud, an Orthodox Jewish summer camp looking to set up on the property of the former Four Seasons bungalow colony on Geiger Road, have been working tirelessly to bring the property up to the Town of Wawarsing's specifications, much to the approval of Wawarsing's Building Code Enforcement Officer, Barron Berg.

"They worked hammer and tong over there," he says of the work being done at the site. "They had so many contractors in, they were virtually getting in everybody else's way — people for paving, bringing in the gravel and compacting it, putting in the septic systems, and all the piping that was required, renovating the buildings. They really had a full-court press going on there, and they really did a very credible job."

Berg says that the camp is all set to open for business, and that the only improvements left to be done on the property are detailed on a punch-list of "non-critical items" that will be taken care of.

"I'm going to be going back there on Friday to do a re-inspection," says Berg, adding that "they're okay with the health department," too. The Ulster County Health Department's approval of their septic system was a crucial part of their being allowed to open. Berg says that the health department's official approval will come as soon as the person who's supposed to sign the paperwork returns from a short leave of absence.

Reports that the proprietors of the camp are performing their renovations and improvements properly comes in stark contrast to the ongoing crisis at the Homowack lodge in Mamakating, which is currently housing a similar type of camp, but amid a staggering list of building violations and safety concerns. Scrutiny of the application for the camp on Geiger Road arose when the Wawarsing Planning Board overturned their initial decision to decline their application after a special meeting was held at Town Hall.

"They did do everything by the book," says Berg of the camp.

This new camp on the former Four Seasons grounds on Geiger Road (near Bayit V'gan) has beautiful grounds and breathtaking views all around. Still, 3 Million dollars is alot of money for a place that needs so much work to bring it up to your standards. The old foggies that were there until now coming from Florida each summer speaking yiddish and listening to yiddish radio on Shabbos, nebach, simply let the place get over grown. The pool is very small as well. But they definately pupmed a lot of work into turning the place into a vibrant chassidishe colony and camp. Hats offf to them!
Keep up the good work Rabbis Goldwurm and Weiss.

I'm not at all surprised! Reb Moishe and his rebbitzen do everything right. That is why they run a very successful yeshiva and IY"H that is why the camp will be a success. Keep up the good work

Why were they forced to do everything by the book? when its common knowledge that when Goy or non frum or non hasidic request help the local township is far more lenient and turns a blind eye for them , I also Wonder if they will ever turn a profit,
After All the well connected locals got these Fat contracting jobs!! so the hapless yeshiva can open for the measly 8 weeks . !! We are in GOLUS

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble. In the beginning this yeshiva also tried to have the camp open in shlocky condition. They cut corners at every opportunity. But the local officials weren't buying it. Then when the summer started and their boys were roaming the streets in the city, the yeshiva saw they had no choice and decided to play ball.
It is a good yeshiva though, and they did do things right in the end, so kudos to them.

Please explain, since when is the safety of Yiddish children not paramount? By not following building, fire & health codes which are designed by professionals to protect the citizens of this country you are needlesly putting Yidden at risk. Please explain your rational. And by the way, since when have received a heter to disregard the Din HaMalchus?

This is the exception and not the norm, and sadly this should be the norm & not the exception. Why we think that building codes, permits, inspections do not apply to us is not only mind bogling but revolting. Let us remember that while we represent only 1/5th of 1% of the worlds popultaion, everything a Yid does is viewed by the goyim through a microscope. Let us B'EH keep this in mind and make sure that all we do in life is a Kiddish HaShem. Gut Shabbos!

I hope you guys realize what it takes to take an old, decrepit place and make it "by the book".

The problem in the catskills is that the governing bodies want to have all-year-round places built -- for greater profitability to their coffers (at least they wanted to until the economy crashed) so it's very difficult to get permits for new bungalows versus homes, and repairing rotting infrastructures is no mean feat.

With a Rosh Yeshiva like Reb Moshe and a Rebitzen like Rebitzen Raizel, just for that alone we have to keep those checks rolling in ....... The way they run the yeshiva all year and the camp all summer is not to be believed. No wonder there is a waiting list of over 100 bochorim for applications.
Thats what we need today in the chasidesher world, a Rosh Yeshiva that understands to a bochers smallest detail..........

I don't know if it's a kiddush hashem or not, but I'm definitely not jealous of them. I'm sure that they would have never bought the camp should they know the problems the facility has.
