Maybe we can avoid the usual dumb comments that "only hashem can control the weather" or that "no yiddin should be inolved in this effort since it is contrary to daas torah to try to change what hashem wants to happen". With that logic, every yiddeshe scientist or engineer who has contributed to positive change in the world would be guilty of apikorsus. Sometimes, we can improve on the Ebeshter's work....its called "tikun olam".

Why did I not think of that? I threw ice cubes into the water and it changed a storm from a Catagory 5 to a 3. If only I thought of the pumps ! Maybe he can figure out why my Windows crashes too. Oh I forgot. He never could figure out how to make windows work !!!

Can someone explain why this is called playing G-D but taking a vaccine to prevent an illness, for exapmle, does not.
If a hurricane is en route to new york, and we have a way to prevent it, would u say: Wait, aren't u guys playing god here? maybe we should just let the hurricane kill us all?"
Men may -- and should -- try to prevent anything from killing humans.

i think that g-d gave him the wisdom and money, to help mankind!
and this is exactly what every one should try to do is help each other.
the more money and power g-d gave you, the more he will demand of you to return to others, that are looking out for it .

The sevarah makes sense. Warm ocean water is what powers hurricanes. If you could cool enough water to lower the water surface temperature under the storm it would certainly weaken the storm it if not cause it to dissipate entirely. The devil, as they say, is in the details. The key word is "enough" and that is the engineering problem. How do you design and build the system to pump "enough" cold water to cool the surface temperature "enough" to have an effect. I don't doubt that it could be done, heck, I could do it myself given unlimited funds, material and time. It remains to be seen, however, whether or not it can be done under practical circumstances. It does appear to be worth the effort to find out. If it works it would not only be a boon to mankind, it would also probably make a ton of money from government contracts from all the countries that are affected by tropical cyclonic storms.

small correction- we are not improving g-ds world bc we can do a better job but g-d made this world with imperfections so us humans could work on it and perfect it

Note to all: The project does not seek to control the "weather". Weather patterns are far to large and complicated for deliberate human intervention to have any significant immediate impact. The project is intended to mitigate individual storms. Hurricane dynamics are pretty well understood and mitigating them, at least in theory, is possible. Even if you could just downgrade a Catagory IV storm to a Catagory II you could save billions of dollars of damage.

Upon further consideration, I see another problem that could sink (no pun intended) the project because of the scale of the equipment required. Cold water is, of course, heavier than warm water. If you pump cold water from the abyss up to the surface, it will sink back down. It will carry some of the surface heat with it but you won't end up with cooler surface water in an area big enough to do some good unless you can pump an awful lot of cold water fast enough to overcome normal solar heating. that's gonna take some humongous piping and pumps, and lots of power to run them. Your going to need barges bigger that any I'm used to, or your going to need lots and lots of barges.
