Spring Glen, NY - Fire Destroys Abandoned Building Belonging to Skver Girls Camp |

Spring Glen, NY - A Shabbat-morning fire destroyed an abandoned building near the former Homowack Lodge. Also did firefighters respond to the lodge’s main building early in the day for a false alarm.
The fire, about 5:10 a.m., was at a building that used to house staff for the hotel. It has been abandoned for many years, fire officials said.
The three-story structure was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.
Because the building was abandoned and no electricity was running to it, fire authorities are treating it as a suspicious case.
Firefighters spend roughly three hours putting out the fire.
They were also called to the Homowack’s main building about noon on Saturday when an alarm went off. Authorities say it was a false alarm.
The two buildings are not attached, but are owned by the same Orthodox Jewish group from Rockland County.
That group, known as the Skver sect from New City, has been mired in controversy lately. After a large oil spill on the ground this month, state inspectors found numerous violations at the Machne Bnos Square Camp.
They were cited for inoperable/defective fire suppression and fire alarm systems, pervasive moisture problems from leaking roofs and plumbing and mold in occupied and unoccupied buildings. Inspectors discovered numerous electrical problems resulting from leaking pipes flowing over electrical boxes.
The state health department asked the camp to vacate the building, but as of Saturday adults and campers were still sleeping in the building.
Inspectors were reportedly planning to re-visit the site.

If this fire was the result of a Jewish individual(s), the mass embarrassment the Jewish people as a whole will get is just too awful to elaborate on.

After a week of warnings about conditions at the camp, Skvere obviously has been warned about the risks to these girls and has taken no action. Do they not care about the lives at risk. Does someone have to burn to death for then to take action??

Your "shabbos paranoia" is beyone stupid. Right, the fire chief deliberately set the fire to make a point and risk lives in the process. Maybe he flew over some of the bochurim from Meah Sheaarim who have had coniserable practice over the past 2 weeks setting fires. They would have blended in well at a Skvere camp for girls and no one would suspect them of setting the fire.

You seem to forget that a few miles down the road, the South Falsburg Fire Chief admitted to setting fire to an abonded bungalow.

You may be right and that is the problem. Why do yiddin willingly live in such filth and run down conditions in these camps and bungalow colonies all over the Catskills when they are not fit for animals. There are a few rich yiddin who bought these properties for pennies years ago, made minimal repairs and then rented them out at obscenely high rents to other yiddin.

My husband told me a case of a yeshiva that didn't repair faulty electricity. A fire broke out & a boy jumped out of the window to his death. Very sad. Happened 20 years ago and hopefully never again.
Safety is priority.
