Sullivan County, NY - Hardly a day goes by that a police agency in the Catskills and many parts of the Hudson Valley don’t receive a report of a bear wandering into a residential area.

Advertisement:

They are often lured to them by the smell of food, coming from homes or garbage cans and the DEC’s Gene Kelly said make no mistake about it, they are dangerous.

“We’re not talking about Winnie the Pooh here; we’re talking about live, wild animals that can grow quite large,” he said. “Adult male bears can easily 300 or 400 pounds or even larger; they are powerful animals. They don’t look to us as friends, even though they look cuddly and cute. They view us as nothing more than a potential source of food.”

Kelly said keep garbage can lids on tight, don’t stock bird feeders in the summer, turn off kitchen exhaust fans immediately after cooking, and if you are barbequing, be sure to clean off the grill after use and close the lid.

This might be a sign from Hashem that we should all be heading back to the city as Rabbi Nochum Rosenburg offered at his Shabbos speech. Part of what he brought up is that it's not a healthy situation for husband and wife to be separated most of the week. So I am packing my bags and going back home. I will not take any chances, especially the Hashem is hinting it so clearly to us.

But it is still illegal to shoot them down, I guess a bear has some more value to some than a human..

I personaly don't get the twisted connection ur trying to make between R' Nuchem Rosenberg and the bear sittuation upstate; however as usuall R' Rosenberg is on the mark with his point!!!

I was told by the DEC officer that part of the problem is that the kids think the bears are cool...
They were called to 1 specific camp multiple times, turns out the kids were luring & feeding the bear to get a picture of them!!!

I happened to spot a bear down the road from our colony. It was very scary to actually meet up with a black bear eating from someones garbage. Please be very alert and careful with your garbage.

What this is a sign of is that some people are slobs who don't keep their garbage covered and that some people are idiots who think bears are "cute". If you spend time in bear country, learn the rules. Don't keep food or garbage outside. Don't try to feed bears. Black bears are predators that will prey on human children if they get the chance, so don't leave infants and toddlers outside unattended. Report bear sightings immediatly to the local police and the DEP. To #3, Theoretically, you could shoot a black bear if it was in the act of attacking you or another person but you'd better be able to prove it to the DEP. Black bears are legal game in NY and can be hunted with an appropriate license, in season. The fine for killing game out of season and without a license is $10,000. Hunting is the only mechanism for keeping the bear population in check. If you own property in Sullivan County and don't hunt (none of us do), allow and encourage others to hunt on your property and lobby the state legislature to extend the season on black bear.

Legal or not, if you're confronted by a bear you better shoot it down (if you're armed), don't worry about the law, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Like one poster said, being meticulous about any type of garbage or trash is key. You can't put garbage out in plastic bags. Every owner, renter, bungalow colony and camp should make sure to buy proper bear resistant garbage recepticles, use them and wash down the areas around the recepticles regularly.

If you confront a bear, back slowly away (DO NOT RUN) untill you are out of his immediate area. Bear repellent (pepper spray in large containers)is available in all the sporting goods stores in Sullivan county. Buy it, carry it and follow the directions. I do not advise shooting a bear with a handgun (particularly your little bitty 9mm) unless you are a good deal more experienced then I think you are. Animals (and people, for that matter) do not instantly fall down when shot. Even a heart shot will not stop a bear instantly and a wounded bear is a whole lot harder to deal with. Bear repellent works.

and if the bear kills he human will it be jailed and tried? no, IF they manage to catch it, they will prob kill it, but odds are it will get away.
self defense is most important.
if its you or the bear...take care of yourself!

Very sensible and good advice by Raphael Kaufman. If you really want to protect yourself from a bear with a handgun, you will need at least a .44 magnum, preferably a larger caliber weapon that can deliver over 1000 foot-pounds of energy to the target (a .44 magnum delivers 900 foot-pounds). These are not the sort of weapons one carries for personal protection - you movie fans will remember that the .44 magnum is what "Dirty Harry" used.

My family and I for years have vacationed in State Park where black bears are visible and roam around. Black bear are wild animals but different from brown bears and will not attack humans if left alone. If cornered they probably will otherwise they are searching for a well filled garbage can. Their living area is curtailed by the fact that humans are moving in their habitat. If humans would not think of them as cute bears and not leave outside well packed garbage cans with pizza left overs and other food they avoid humans

I have seen a bear 4 times while jogging this summer already. I have called the local Police, the Sheriff and the State DEC. They laugh and say things like "you people from Brooklyn need to close your garbage bins..." There is an unspoken hatred for us here in the Catskills. The people who live here all year long have their rifles; we do not. The bears go to a regular resident, they'll get shot at; they come to us and we are vulnerable and the authorities laugh. We are all those big shots from Agudah and OU when Jewish lives could be at stake and we need some representation??

The Ruger "Alaskan" model is actually "compact" (relatively speaking, in its shortest bbl configuration) and is specifically made for that purpose............Not, mind you for going bear hunting, but for carry in bear country. It also can be used with far less powerful 45 LC ammo, a oppossed to the 454 Cassul round.

The local authorities in no way have the money and resources to trap and relocate all the bears. Not all of the locals have rifles -- most don't. If you feel you need a rifle, there is nothing to stop you from getting the training and buying one. People may be better off carrying bear reppellant as a prior commenter suggested.

This is not a jewish/gentile issue. It is a city/country issue. For example, on one of the lakes, the gentiles all head back to the city Sunday night. They put the trash out before they leave instead of taking it with them. The locals will wait until Monday morning just before the trash collectors come to bring the trash barrels out of the shed or garage.

Black Talon has not been produced since 1993, and light hollowpoints are the last thing you want to use on a bear!

Inasmuch as David Hamelech described to Shaul his killing of predators, it would seem that a Jew may hunt dangerous animals that may be a threat

So for the fall: A vasikin minyan in the woods, followed by a bear hunt -who is joining me?

fyi, black talon is not just a hollow point it was discontinued because it was designed to work as a saw capable of penetrating armour. it can definitly violate the skin of a black bear which is not as tough as that of other bears. and .40 caliber comes very close to that of a .357 magnum, plenty of stoping power.

tests done on goats showed that the .44 magnum hand gun had a one shot stoping power and it was instent. a six clip placed half right on any med size animal is enough to neutrulize it very quickly. this monster handgun is the campers best friend.
