New York - Fewer Drivers Hit the Roads |
|

For the 19th month in a row, traffic on the MTA's nine Bridges and Tunnels has decreased, plunging from 837,537 cars every day in October 2007 to 799,890 this past May, the agency's latest stats show.
There were 200,000 fewer drivers buzzing over the crossings this May as opposed to May 2008, even though gas prices are an average $1.60 less than 12 months ago, the agency said.
The reason for the decline is the economy and ongoing job losses in the city, said Bill Henderson, of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA.
"Bridge traffic tends to be dependent on two things: weather and employment," he said.
"If people are unemployed, they can take a few extra minutes to bridge shop and use one of the free East River crossings," he said, instead of paying the MTA's toll.
Year-to-date, there were 3.7 million less crossings - about 3.1 percent - from the same time frame last year.
