New York City - A war of words over mayoral control of the city schools is escalating between Mayor Michael Bloomberg and some Democratic State Senators.

The fight over mayoral control has taken a bitter and personal turn in recent days, and it doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon.

The mayor wants his control of the city's schools to be reauthorized by the State Senate, but it's been held up by Democratic senators who are demanding more parental involvement in schools. And there's been a lot of heated back and forth over the last few days over the future of the schools.

The latest twist came earlier in the day Monday, when four Democratic State Senators met for lunch in the Bronx and assailed the mayor for what they feel are inappropriate attacks against them.

Senator Carl Kruger focused on a comment the mayor made recently in which Kruger says the mayor compared the senators to Adolf Hitler.

"It's a sad comment. It's a comment that says to people like myself and to so many hundreds of thousands of millions of people who lost family in the holocaust. Even to raise the name of Hitler, in and of itself, should have a public rebuke and is worthy of apology. We're not Hitler. We're legislators," Kruger said.

The remark in question was made by the mayor on his radio show on Friday, when he said it didn't make sense to keep negotiating with the senators. To illustrate the point, the mayor brought up Neville Chamberlain, the British prime minister who tried to appease the Nazis. A spokesman for the mayor says he wasn't trying to make any analogy and denied that the mayor was comparing anyone to Adolf Hitler.

The mayor did have tough words for the senators in general.

"You know this is just a tactic for some people who don't seem to want to make progress in our schools and you know, the most amazing thing to me is that in virtually all of these senators it is their districts that have seen remarkable improvements in the opportunities that the kids who live there are going to have because the schools are so much better," Bloomberg said.

Assemblyman Dov Hikind issued this afternoon the following Press release:

“The Mayor’s recent comments likening state senators to Nazis are inexcusable and hurtful. His remarks show a complete lack of sensitivity, and an absolute ignorance of history. The Mayor’s outburst sends a message that is utterly unacceptable. It is incumbent upon Mayor Bloomberg to immediately apologize for his hateful tirade to all New Yorkers, especially the Jewish community.”

Sen. Diaz tried to stop it but the Republicans came to the session and voted it through.

Calling anyone who you have a silly little grievance a Nazi is very bad. It's not the insult to the person you are calling a Nazi. It's the fact that you are cheapening what the Nazis have done. This is a form of Holocaust denial.

This mayor can't stand losing and when he is on the shrort end of the stick he loses his cool and says stupid stuff. On the other hand I think too many of us over react too often when someone uses the word "nazi" in a stupid way. I think the mayor needs to apologize not so much for using the word stupidly, but for insulting the state legislature in such a crass manner.

You people are really sick. Listen to the clip of Blumberg talking to John Gambling. No mention of nazi, hitler or anything. There was a reference to the negotiating skills of the British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain. Chamberlain was mentioned by name. That was it.

Hikind is a fool for opening up his mouth, again, and putting his foot into it.

I heard the coment live on Friday and the repeat today. Never was the word or implication said. The only reference was to the negotiating skills of Neville Chamberlain.

"Senator Carl Kruger focused on a comment the mayor made recently in which Kruger says the mayor compared the senators to Adolf Hitler.. "

Kruger lied. And Hikind lied with him. Is this the best that we have?
