Scottsdale, AZ - A U.S. survey indicates speech therapy helps the majority of people who stutter but those who stutter are discriminated against.

Thirty percent of parents participating in the survey, conducted by the National Stuttering Association, say they have received bad advice about stuttering from pediatricians and speech therapists.

The survey found speech therapies that change attitudes toward speaking and stuttering were thought more successful than therapies that focus on speech mechanics.

The survey of the 1,235 participants also indicates:

-- Forty percent of adults who stutter had been denied a job or promotion and 82 percent of children who stutter have been bullied or teased.

-- People who participate in stuttering support groups report fewer negative effects of stuttering and more successful speech therapy than those who do not.

-- People who had speech therapy from a board recognized specialist in fluency disorders had a more successful therapy experience than those who did not.

The survey covered only people who were associated with the NSA and is not representative of all the estimated 3 million Americans who stutter. No margin of error was provided.

As a life long stutterer, the example that I followed is Moshe Rabeinu, also a life long stutterer. When HaShem first called Moshe, he was very self concious about his speech impediment. He told HaShem that he had trouble speaking so HaShem assigned Aaron as Moshe's interloquitor (look it up) and, at the beginning of Shemos, dealing with Pharoh, Aaron, in fact, does all the talking. But as the journey of Klal Yisroel goes on, a funny thing happens, Vayidaber Moshe el B'nei Yisroel... Moshe starts to speak directly to KY until finally, in Devarim, he gives this long, stirring oration. What happened? Nowhere does it say that HaShem cured Moshe's stutter. What apparently happened is that Moshe learned that when you have something important to say, people will listen.
Of course, I cannot compare myself to Moshe Rabeinu but I can and did learn from him. I still stutter but I have no fear of addressing people or a gathering. I too have found that it;s what you say that counts, not necessarily how you say it.

I remember learning a midrash that Moshe was cured from his stuttering at Har Sinai, at the same time that the rest of B'nei Yisroel were cured from their diseases and conditions. (There could be different opinions on this...I don't remember.) Even so I like the way you learn from the story of Moshe and there is a lot of inspiration we can get from the fact that he stuttered.

I have stuttered for years, I went to therapy and it didn't help. I suffer from it every minute of every day. To all of you that don't stutter imagine every time you want to speak someone slaps you on your mouth.
I can't daven for the amud, I can't have maftir on shabbos, can't speak in public, and people laugh at me all the time.
Baruch Hashem I got married and managed to build my own business. I was fired from quite a few jobs and I suspect it was because of my speech. To all of you that speak normally, just thank Hashem you don't know what a bracha it is.
I'm a middle aged father with children, and I ask all of you when you see someone struggle to get the words out DON'T LAUGH!!!

I wish there would be a frum stutter support group.

As the wife of a stutterer, I would do it all over again. I find him to be compassionate since he knows what pain is. The stuttering does not detract from a person's qualities. I don't even hear it anymore when he speaks.

I'm in my mid 50's and have stuttered real bad while growing up I was never very shy so it bothered me very little, I had many friends and was popular I went for therapy a number of years as a kid, it didn't help much. What did help was working on my self to loose the fear of speaking in public. Boruch Hashem I married young have children and grandchildren non stutter. For the last 20 years I've been in public life and do quite a bit of speaking and also daven for the amud quite often, I may stutter once or twice while davening the amida but I don't think anybody notices and those people who knew me while I was stuttering probably don't remember when I did stutter. To those who stutter, be brave have no fear of speaking as one of the comments before said just make sure there is content in your speech, you can most definitely overcome stuttering, I DID....

As a liscensed speech pathologist I'm glad to see this post. In a way, it's turning out to be a frum stuttering support group of our very own. I want to just advise my fellow friends one thing. Beware of therapists that "guarantee" a cure for your stuttering. Although enticing, the cure "won't last". They tend to be too harsh on you and do not focus on your feelings and attitudes which are so important to improve your fluency. I have helped many stutterers, so don't despair and find yourself a caring and effective therapist! Hatzlocho!!

every other beis yaakov girl is a speech therapist. id rather go to someone who is a professional and is in the field because they want to be, and not because all their friends are doing it, and it pays well.

I stutter.
It says if a person has a Isha ra (bad wife) he doesn't see gehinom since the pain is constant and intense. I think a stutter is much worse then a bad wife - IT'S ALWAYS THERE, ALWAYS EMBARRASSING, ALWAYS A STRUGGLE TO SPEAK.

I've been a stutterer all my life. My father stuttered and my son stutters. I've tried speech therapy and voice lessons.Nothing raelly worked. I am a Menahel in a yeshiva and I teach a shiur. I daven as baal tefila on yomim noriam and quite often during the year althogh only kaballos shabbos as I find the rest too hard because of stuttering. The gabaim can't understand why I always refuse those tefillos. In my opinion and experiences the best way to overcome this handicap is to put yourself in those situations and eventually things will improve. I davened a whole year during aveilus and it helped my confidence. It is something that non-stutters can't fathom. This is what we were given and we just have to make the best out of it.

As someone who's always had a stutter, I can feel the pain in each one of these comments. It's an unbearable pain. I agree with #17 that if you put yourself in situations where your forced to speak, it helps in the long run. But it's hard. B"H my stutter is much better than it used to be, but when I do, I always feel people looking at me with shame in their eyes as if I have some life threatening desise. Oh, how I could go on and on. I would like to start a frum support group (in NY). If you stutter or are a professional in the field who would like to be involved, please email me: stuttersupport@gmail.com

I stutter too, and I have stuttered since I was a little boy, and i know too well the hardship of it, I admire the strength of those of u that are not letting it stop you of doing things.

My parents didn't stutter, and my kids don't stutter b.h., but there is a stuttering history in the family.

In my research and personal experience the best way to handle it, is to ignore it, and just go on with life, and not try to hide it.

I too have been to therapy a few times, and to voice coaches, It has helped me on short term, The stuttering itself has its times when its tougher and when its less it depends how tired I am and how much stress I am going through, Stress makes it worse.

I occasionally daven before the Omed and speak in public from time to time b.h., and although It happens that I stutter, I just take a deep breath and continue, and know that i am better off, by not letting the stuttering control my life.

I also did some research on the topic, and wrote a Yiddish article on stuttering, that was published in one of the Heimish newspapers.

I am wiling to share the article, who ever is interested just send me an email to "backup96@gmail.com" and i will email the article, in a PDF file.

If u wish i can email the article to you.
