The Washington, D.C.-based Cancer Project, a vegan advocacy group, wants to force hot dog makers to use warning labels. The group filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Superior Court in Newark on behalf of three New Jersey residents. The defendants are Kraft Foods Inc., manufacturer of the Oscar Mayer brand; Sara Lee Corp.; Nathan's Famous; and the makers of the Hebrew National and Sabrett brands.
The lawsuit cites a report by the American Institute for Cancer Research that concluded regular consumption of processed meat can increase the risk of colorectal and other forms of cancer.

After having one kidney removed because of kidney cancer, I gave up hot dogs and diet soda. Thank G-d it has not recurred in almost 2 years. Hot dogs were my favorite food.

I agree with one exception.
There are people not aware of the nitrate cancer risks from most franks, they should know.
The negative is that years later they will use this as informed risk, you were forewarned so don't sue.

Why is it that all the good stuff has to be bad for us? Who doesn't know that hot dogs are not the healthiest food? Unless they are from the health food store?
We all know what is good and what is not. We just like to eat junk.
If we were all eating healthy foods, there would hardly be any diseases to worry about. Still, some of us are luckier than others, and can still enjoy hot dogs in the nursing home. Well, when we get to be over 90 no one should be allowed to tell us what we can or cannot eat. Whatever we do must be done in moderation.
Hot dogs, once or twice a year maybe. Maybe not.
French fries- hardly ever. Chocolate? only the dark one....UGH.
Highly processed foods with MSG and artificial colors, etc. not for us most of the time. Cholent, kugel, kishka, and ptcha, now that will be taken care of by the neshama yeseira!

BTW, there are some healthy kosher hot dogs I saw recently (perhaps Neshama brand or some similar name) which are made from chicken and turkey, and contain no nitrates or nitrites. Before I got sick, I wouldn't touch a chicken hot dog, as it didn't compare to the real thing. Now, I don't have a choice.

There are much healthier hot dogs than chicken or turkey ones. There are ones made from tofu and wheat gluten, such as Not Dogs. They are high in protein, and very low in fat. They are easy to find in health food stores, and most of the brands have a good hechsher.

Meat is bad though, especially high fat ground meat.

There is no comparison between junk food and nitrates in hot dogs. Nitrates are a known carcinogen (cancer causing agent). The reason they are not illegal is because conventional belief is that they carcinogen leaves the body quickly, so it, in theory, poses no cancer risk. That belief is slowly being eroded by newer studies, one of which recently came out that carcinogens remain in children's stomach's, undigested, for a long time. Also, even if it does pass through the body quickly, which it doesn't, that doesn't mean it poses less of a danger or is less "cancer causing."

There should be warnings on everything! Food with sugar, high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors, chemical additives etc. Why just pick on hot dogs? People should become informed consumers and educate themselves on what is healthy and what is not. BUT, I don't think we should have food police telling us what to eat and what not, or to tax our hot dogs either. Everything is okay in moderation. You don't eat hot dogs every day (unless you are nuts). I don't think eating them once in a while is going to kill you. Maybe a can of soda everyday will.

The problem is nitrates, more than nitrites. Regarding nitrite, one liter of pomegranate juice contributes 100 times more nitrite to the diet than a hot dog, and a spinach salad and a corned beef sandwich contribute about the same amount. Radishes are naturally high in nitrites, as is celery.
Let me see them put warning labels on celery.

If you want to be concerned about the health of meat, that's your business but I do not have to suffer due to your utter mishigas. You obviously have a predispositon to hot dogs so you have issues with it, others dont so leave us alone and MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!
BTW, what will you do when the bais ha'mikdosh is rebuilt b'korov mamesh and you have to bring that first korbon like we will all have to. You will get your portion of the b'haima to eat and what will you say then about meat?? I dont think, "Sorry God but I'm a VegHead" will work so start getting used to meat. The Kohanim would run around fleishig all day!!!!!

Warning labels can be bad for your health. They cause worry which can promote insomnia and high blood pressure. The cost of regulating their placement on products can lead to higher food prices which can result in nutrtional deficiencies as people cut back on buying nutritional foods. Their writing is so small it can cause visual problems.

Drinking large amounts of fruit juice is not a good idea. Get your vitamin c from vegetables or vitamin supplements.
"Fructose linked to liver problems"
"A century ago, Americans ate roughly three teaspoons of fructose a day, mainly from produce. Today, we eat five times that amount, or about 17 teaspoons of fructose a day. Most of that comes from processed foods and beverages. The main sources are sugary drinks, baked goods, cereals, snacks and fruit juices. "

And they would takeh get sick from it. That's why the BHMK had a doctor on staff.
If someone wants to be a vegetarian there's nothing wrong with it. When Moshiach comes they can eat a kezayis of the korban pesach every year, and it won't kill them; the rest of the time they can eat vegetables gezunterheit. Just don't force this on the rest of us.

Yes, it does. The central lie that these groups push is that if a substance can cause cancer at huge doses then it's "carcinogenic" and bad for you even in small doses. That's nonsense. The dose makes the poison; EVERYTHING is lethal in a big enough dose, and beneficial in a small enough dose. If the amount of nitrates in hot dogs is below the harmful threshold then there is NO REASON to avoid them.

The kohanim in the times of the beit hamikdash did not eat hot dogs. Many rabbis say that the korbonot in the next beit hamikdash will be vegetarian. Some rabbis say that all humans will again be vegetarians after moshiach comes. Humans were vegetarians until after the flood.
Animal sacrifices would have so much greater meaning though in a society where meat isn't ordinarily eaten.
Not eating meat is suffering? I guess at first until someone gets used to it, but after a relatively short period of time, one can easily get used to it.

A person can bring a mincha if he wants to. There's no need to bring a beheima. Or a person can bring a korban olah, which is not eaten.
