Deal, NJ - Dozens of arrests are taking place across New Jersey this morning and  many public officials—including the mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus, the deputy mayor of Jersey City—are among those being taken into custody.

FBI and IRS agents are making the roundups all across the state in what is being described as one of the biggest investigations of its kind in Jersey’s scandal-plagued history.

It appears to be a corruption related investigation but justice department and FBI spokesmen would not comment on the details this morning.

Arrests and searches are underway across Jersey City, Secaucus and numerous Hudson and Bergen county locations.

In past years, New jersey has seen more than 100 corruption-related arrests of public officials.  No word on the specific charges against those being rounded up today.   A press conference is expected later today.

Among those arrested this morning were Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Baldini, Hoboken Mayor Peter Camarano and and Secaucus Mayor Denis Elwell, authorities said that the arrests are for international money laundering and corruption probe that includes community leaders, five rabbis in the Syrian Jewish communities of Deal and Brooklyn.

Agents also raided religious institutions to make arrests and collect information. An employee at the Ohel Yaacob synagogue on Ocean Avenue in Deal said authorities searched the office early this morning.

Ignorance must truly be bliss for you. Where are they going after people whether they are 100% innocent? Who are these masses of people being abused by the Federal government? I want to know who these people are... because I can't find any.

As for this case, once again... WE KNOW NOTHING about what is going on. WE KNOW NOTHING about the case that his been built here. Anyone proclaiming innocence or guilt at this point is a MORON who assumes every yid is innocent and every goy is guilty.

As for the woman in Mea Shearim.... you know NOTHING about her guilt or innocence and neither does anyone else here on VIN. The fact that she was found to be clinically "sane" does not make her innocent by any stretch of the imagination... nor does it make her guilty. Why not wait for ALL the facts to come out. Unless you are a mindless idiot who always assumes that the yid is innocent.

No, it doesn't say that in the US Constitution.

The US government is legal, and taxes in the US are legally levied and Jews are required to pay them. See Bava Kamma 113. And your lack of gratitude to the gentile government that has been good to more Jews than any in the history of our people is distressing.

No one is "getting back on the gov." People who cheat on taxes, launder money, engage in welfare fraud, etc. are stealing from me and every other person who works, reports all their income and pays taxes. People like you who applaud cheaters are no better. Not liking the laws is no excuse. There are legal and proper ways to fight laws you don't like.

In this country you fight back with your vote. I am a Libertarian and don't agree with most of what our govt does. However, the law is the law. We are a nation of laws. If you want to change them, GET OUT AND VOTE. By your logic, I may as well go out and sell cocaine on the street so I can make tax-free money. You make no sense. Violating the law will just get you thrown in prison... and rightfully so.

How can you say this in the 9 days? We are in galus because of sinas chinam (senseless hatred). Of course if the charges are true they should be punished, but to lump all people who are successful and say that they made their money illegally is slander! I don't agree with the fancy lifestyle - the mansion, Ferrari etc.. But I (not a syrian) must protest this blatant sinah (hatred) for someone who has more money than you (it seems).

Do you know that many of the Syrians come to minyan real early and are at their place of business at 7am Sunday included? Most don't return to their homes until well past closing time. These good people who as you describe "few of the Syrians even have college degrees", work hard have respect for their rabanim and support torah. since when do you need a college degree to make it in this country. I know plenty of people who have Phd's who are unemployed. You must remember that hashem provides and not your college degree.

Don't miss understand my point, I don't condone the illegal activity alleged, but your statement smelled of jealousy.

What a complicated country this place is changing in to. You can get arrested and publicized picture brake families, tons of money for lawyers etc. AND FOR WHAT?

No other civilized country in the world behaves like this. They can arrest you for so many reasons more then the amount of recipes your wife has in the kitchen. Think about it if you a family of 6-9 ( and blessed is he who does) and wants to go to any place, party-outing-occasion, and he drives in his vehicle but does not follow the rules of lets say NYC, he can loose his license, fine of over $1000 and more.
Now did the elected officials take in to consideration bigger families other then their own? I can bet you non of them have more then 2 kids and a dog so how is that correct representations? Are we with big families correctly understood and taken in to consideration, Tuition-Kosher food-Tznius dressing etc.

NO THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND US + for most of these law makers family, respect does not mean much!

bout 20 FBI Agents going around williamsburg knocking on doors

The truth is that it's very sad to read many of the comments posted. Unfortunately, it is true that this is all about revenge and trying to save themselves. When you read the paper and see the words "cooperative witness" know that it is one of our fellow jews. 2 years ago this man made a huge mistake and was arrested for the same corruption. However, he decided to cut a deal with the FBI and bring tape recorders to meetings with heads of charity organisations. Interestingly enough, this cooperative witness pushed some (some others accepted right away) of the Rabbis until they agreed. Noone says that money laundering is permitted. It's defenately prohibited even if you are going to do a Mitzvah with it. However, being "moser" is much worse!!! It is Chayav Mita!!!!!
For those who think that this has nothing to do with the 9 days, you are wrong . The arrest happened during the nine days and that is enough for us to make the connection with kamtsa and Bar Kamtsa. It is sad that we don't learn from our own history let's just pray that it doesn't end the same way.
One thing that we can for sure do, especially in these terrible days, is work on loving and accepting each fellow jew and instead of employing "Sinaat Hinam" let's employ "ahavat Hinam" so we can bring an end to this!!

The locals, the TRUE Jersians who actually spend money in these towns, call your summer holidays THE SYRIAN 5000 and we are counting down the days until you leave!!!!!

It seems to me that the syrian jews of deal nj are very misunderstood. I myself am a syrian jew that comes to deal for the summer and i am very shocked by your attitude toward your fellow jew. Askenazic jew, Sephardic jew, Syrian jew, russian jew, Argentinean jew, african jew.... We're all brothers and sisters, we should all stand together because as jews we have enough people trying to bring us down. We are surrounded by anti semitism. It hurts me to see that this is the way you feel towards us. Maybe the way we are so close knit comes off as arrogance but I think this is just a misjudgment. The first thing we were taught in our yeshivahs and at home is respect and I apologize for the few that have given you this impression that we are rude and disrespectful. I wish you can just realize that we are one no matter where our ancestors are from. If you can just put an effort into coming to peace with your fellow jews we will have a better chance at dealing with our external problems.

“His business was to entice vulnerable people to give up a kidney for $10,000 which he would turn around and sell for $160,000,” said Marra.

What is it that you Einsteins don't get?

1) Goyim (and secular Jews) outnumber the 'frimmer' by magnitudes even in the NY area.
2) People already think of politicians as slimy creatures. Not so (at least not yet) frum people and especially rabbis. (I hope)

They are not good at business. They dont have to be. When your boss, co-workers and clients are all family members, your job and earnings are guaranteed. Who are you trying to kid? I live a mile away from Deal. These Brooklynites come here and are disgusting to deal with. Absolutely disgusting. Its not the wealth, as I grew up rich as well. It is the sense of entitlement, the rudeness, the world stops for me disgraceful attitude and the way they flaunt their money like it is something to brag about. It is petty and embarassing.I hear "do you know who I am?" and "My father is...." at least 2X a day. No one outside of your enclave CARES who you are!! My prayer is that you all hate this "unfair treatment" so much that you get the hell out of this area once and for all. In the Asbury Park Press a Deal resident had the GAUL to say that if the Syrians were not in Deal NJ that it would be a run down, poor beach town, and we should be greatful! Sounds like you are a little bit jealous, neighbor. I live in Deal and we raise our children to be respectful of all . There may be some who are arrogant but they exist in every community. As far as not being "good" at business, it all comes from Hashem, but we also believe that g-d only helps those who help themselves.
Yes,my husband in in his families business but they work like DOGS 6 days a week, even in the summer. As a kid he mopped the floors in the office and slowly worked his way up, and never with a sense of entitlement. So why dont you just worry about yourself and go take a cold shower. We are all Jews. We will live and die together. Unless maybe you are a goy.

As I recall, Syrians populated this area way b4 any of the Ahkenaz did. I’m thinking, (as I scratch my head in total disbelief how someone so stupid can even read) why you don’t just pack up your family and move the hell away from the shore, if the riff raff that brought up the property value in this resort town 100 fold is too much for you to deal with! I find the personal attacks on my community, my family, and my culture disgusting. Further more you pompous putz, Deal is and always has been a summer resort, as well as all the surrounding towns. Too bad no one explained this to you the class you took at Yeshiva, “Moron 101”. Thank G-D I don’t use your idiocy as a barometer to judge the rest of your peers. It’s scum like you that divide our people.
