Jerusalem - Israeli Government sources believe that one of the aftereffects of the massive money-laundering and illegal organ trading case that broke this week will be a sharp decline in donations to Israeli yeshivas, particularly those linked with the ultra-Orthodox party Shas and its spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef.

Sources say that the wave of donations received by Israel's Sephardic yeshivas will significantly diminish as the scandal breaks, even by Jewish bodies unrelated to the affair who want to distance themselves from it.

One of the main suspects in the money laundering case is Rabbi Eliyahu Ben-Haim, who is a close associate of Rabbi David Yosef, Ovadia Yosef's son. Ben Haim is also very active in the Yechavei Da'at organization, headed by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's family.

David Yosef heads the Yechavei Da'at kolel, an institute for advanced studies of the Talmud and rabbinic literature, in Jerusalem. Ben-Haim has helped elicit donations from rich U.S. Jews for the institution in the past. These donations are expected to cease.

Another suspect in the case is Rabbi Edmond Nahum, who is considered to be a close confidant of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef himself. Nahum also transferred donations to the Yosef family.

The Israel Police is set to investigate several Sephardic yeshivas, among them those linked with Shas, under suspicion of money laundering as related to the case. Police sources speculate that the investigation may expand to include banks that may have been involved in the possible money laundering operation

It's too bad that perfectly legitimate charities will be affected. Maybe a silver lining to come out of this will be non-profits becoming more transparent and following good accounting and management practices.

The merit of all the Torah and Chesed Ben-Haim is responsible for, should b"h save him from this ugly trap, and in the future he should be able to get the same amounts without any laundering.

You are either a fool or deliberately trying to sabotage the yeshivot's fund raising efforts. The money comes from people like you and I who write checks to these institutions. While love of hashem may motivate yidden to give tzadakah, the common sense hashem gave us says don't give another dime to these yeshivot until all the facts are known and they have put in place some outside independent auditors who can assure us the money is going to honest needs. When so called ehrleche rabbonim such as those arrested are engaging the same slimy crimes with this ganof Dweck, why should we trust any of them???

Sorry to have to say this but......
Shas' Yeshiva network was built on Jewish blood, by Shas them being silent accomplices in Oslo, Wye etc. and receiving millions from the Israeli govt.

If Hashem decides on the amount of money that anyone-- or any yeshiva-- will get in any year, then what kind of terrible lack of emunah and bitachon does one display if one commits crimes in order to raise money?

Good! The Ashkenazi yeshiva system has repressed Sephardic learning as inferior for years. Too many Sephardi families were forced to convert their minhagim so their boys could become "ravs." It makes me sick to see our husbands and sons dressed in black suits and ridiculous black hats even on Shabbat when we shoul dbe wearing all white. Maybe if these Litvish-ized institutions fail, we will find our way back to true Torah learning of the sort that raised up Chocham Rav Ovadia Yosef, Shlita.

Midah k'neged midah. The scandal came out in public just as the extreme showing off in public by the extravagant homes and wealth.
