New York, NY - Verizon Wireless asked a federal court today to rule that claims it makes in advertisements, including its position as "America's most reliable 3G network," are truthful and accurate.

Verizon Wireless is striking back at AT&T Inc., which challenged Verizon's advertising with the National Advertising Division of the Council for Better Business Bureaus on July 1. AT&T said Verizon's claims that it runs the best and most reliable third-generation wireless networks are false and unproven.

In filing with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Verizon Wireless said AT&T's challenge with the NAD "invented a new formula for calculating 'reliability' and claims that by applying this newly concocted formula its 3G wireless network has superior 'reliability.'"

Verizon Wireless said speed and reliability are two distinct matters.

Michael Coe, a spokesman for Dallas-based AT&T, called Verizon's claim that speed is not a relevant factor "preposterous."

"Data network speed is an essential factor to consumers when it comes to data transmission on their wireless devices," Coe said in a statement.

Verizon Wireless asked the court to declare its advertising claims are truthful, accurate and substantiated, and to award it costs and attorney's fees from AT&T.

That's just what you told her. Fortunately not all of us feel a need to hang up on our spouses!

This article is NOT about landline or DSL, it's about wireless. Verizon is the undisputed king when it comes to wireless. That's the only reason it was able to stay number 1 even though it doesn't offer the iPhone. I pay an arm and a leg for Verizon but I have never considered leaving them due to their reliable service.

At&t works everywhere in the mountains. Verizon works mostly too, the issue is that the cell sites are built to carry a certain volume of calls. When hundreds of thousands of yidden come up ki"h especially over weekends it overloads the system and what it does it bounces off people to make room for the next. The iPhone is still the best phone out there.

Your all missing out on a big secret .I happened to have T~mobile for six years , besides there top customer service there rates are the best bar to non. I hardly have a problem with drop calls and because its GSM it works globaly customer service freely provided me with the unlocking code to be able to change to local Sim cards in any country i travel to (something you can not to with Verizon) to top it off they offered me $49.99 unlimited service for being a loyal customer, try that with Verizon.

I just love this mishigas. Who cares who your ISP is or which phone company you use! The reports asks the question "What does 'most reliable' mean?" If there isn't an accepted industry definition, then ATT's suit is worthless.

Here (below) are the top ten telecoms by subscribers. No surprise that China Mobile comes in at #1 with 478 million subscribers. It should be noted that an estimated 279 million of China Mobile’s total are “prepaid” – not on any contract (pay-as-you-go services). Apple’s rumored (yet to be announced) carrier partner China Unicom, comes in at the number 5 spot with 137.7 million subscribers. Like China Mobile, a healthy share of China Unicom’s customers are prepaid.

The top US carrier, Verizon, barely made it on the list (10th). Deutsche Telekom makes the list in 6th place (T-Mobile US is owned by Deutsche Telekom).

World’s largest wireless telecom carriers by subscriber-base:

China Mobile 478.8 million
Vodafone Group 247.3 million
Telefonica Group 190.1 million
America Movil Group 174.9 million
China Unicom 137.7 million
Deutsche Telekom Group (T-Mobile) 127.1 million
Telnor Group 96.6 million
Airtel (Bharti) 93.9 million
MTS Group 92.2 million
Verizon Wireless 86.6 million
