New York City - De Blasio Is Back on the Ballot

New York City - City Councilman Bill de Blasio, a Brooklyn Democrat who had been removed from the Democratic party line in the September primary election because of a one-digit typographical error, was reinstated on the ballot on Tuesday by the New York City Board of Elections.

The board voted 9-to-0, with one abstention, to reinstate Mr. de Blasio, who is running for public advocate.

Mr. de Blasio’s lawyers, Stanley K. Schlein and Henry T. Berger, successfully argued that a clerical error made by the counsel to the Board of Elections, Steven H. Richman, was at the root of the problem.

“It was our own process that negatively impacted the candidate,” said Frederic M. Umane, the president of the Board of Elections.

He needed 7,500 valid signatures of city voters, and his campaign gathered 125,000. But a cover page submitted to the Board of Elections with his packet of signature incorrectly stated that there were 131 folders, when there were actually 132.

Mr. de Blasio faces several primary opponents in the race for public advocate: Mark Green, who held the job from 1994 to 2001; Norman Siegel, the civil liberties lawyer; and Councilman Eric N. Gioia of Queens. The incumbent, Betsy Gotbaum, is not seeking a third term.
