The Transportation Department called congressional offices late Thursday to alert them to the decision to halt the program, which offered owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.
The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns of large backlogs in the system, prompting the suspension.

What do you want from govt.? and you still think they will be able to aford national health care? well please call your representatives that you do not want socialized health care because they will not have money to fund it after a year or two. who will you cry to then if a close family member needs a hip replacement or if someone will need chemo treatment? the govt will tell you sorry there is no money we cannot pay for the treatment let them take some pain killers.

As far as health insurance, believe me, if you need something you will be fighting with your private insurance company for your life to get the care you need. This just happened to my sister. She has the most expensive private insurance and she needed an emergency surgery to save her life. The insurance company fought with the doctor for five hours while she nearly bled to death.
B"H she will live, but she has a long recovery ahead of her due to the damage from waiting so long for the surgery. Anything would be better than this crooked for profit only system.

It sure is a major waste of taxpayers money. If YOU need a car I should NOT have to pay so you could have that car. You do not have a G-d given right under any law in this country to own a car or for ME or ANYONE else to pay for it. You want a new car, YOU pay for it with YOUR money.

You are correct that sometimes we have to fight with our PRIVATE insurance companies for coverage. I am sorry to hear about your sister and we all wish her a Refuah Sh'Laima. If your sister feels the insurance company was at fault in the extra damage caused to her, she should take them to court and sue.
Had she been subject to government health care (even if Pres Obama doesn't want us calling it that, that's because he admitted he hasn't read any of the bills and doesn't know whats REALLY in there or doesn't understand how things REALLY work), I am sorry to say she probably would no longer be among the living. The govt would not be interested in whether she lives or not, they would be interested if she would be "worth the risk" financially in saving. If the private insurance company was giving the doc a hard time, imagine the govt doing it.
Have you seen ANY govt entitlement program work? Medicare? Medicaid? Welfare? Etc. Govt cant make entitlement programs work. Socialized medicine is NOT the answer. Ask the people in any other country that has it and they will tell you. Why do so many people from foreign countries come to the USA when they need surgery or special care? Would you want to get sick CHV in Canada, France, UK, etc.? I've seen the UK health care system and they are TERRIBLE! Its quite unusual to get someone there who gives a hoot about you. That all stems from the govt healthcare.
You want a board who has no idea who you are to decide if you should be treated for certain problems or do you want you & your doc to have the say in how you are treated??
What happens when after they G-d forbid pass this law they see they were incorrect on the amount of money they need and instead of 50-60% taxes it goes up to 70% for EVERYONE? Dont think this is limited to the rich because thanks to Obama there are a lot less rich people out there so the line is drawn lower and lower.
Are you ready for a VAT tax to pay for this? VAT tax means you are taxed from the Feds on EVERYTHING you buy - in the range of 10% or more!! The UK has that and if they were smart instead of walking around like sheep they would rebel. You want taxes on everything in the name of health? They could do that since ANYTHING could be a "risk" to your health if you are honest with yourself.
As for the "for profit only system," it is a shame that you dont understand that companies need to make money to survive and grow. Do you or your husband have a job? Does the company make money? Why? Why not work for free after all why should you make a profit?
Finally, if they wanted to do it right, instead of giving away taxpayer money they could have offered to allow us claim it on the 2009 taxes. This way there is no money given away. Anyone who wanted would have been happy to get a car that way.

Not only that; if a woman is pregnant with a fetus which shows sign of brain damage or chromosomal abnormality, she would have to have it aborted because the health care system will not be willing to pay for any care this child will need.

Though i'm sorry your sister had to wait "five hours" to get approved for emergency surgery ( I do find her hard to believe that a doctor would let your sister bleed out while he was on the phone with the insurance company, I think there are laws againts that kind of practice.) five hours is better then waiting two years for the doctors appointment, one year to get diagnosed, and another three years wait for an opening for surgery. "Anything" would not be better, Some good changes, would be. Best of health to your sister.

Here it is direct from the cars.gov site FAQ's page:
I don't drive an American car but I would like to trade in my old car for a newer, more fuel efficient one. Is this program only for American cars?
No. You may trade in or buy a domestic or a foreign vehicle.

This is too funny. Everyone is in here claiming that this is a failure. This is the fastest turn-around on a stimulus program in HISTORY. $1 billion was pumped into the economy for the purchase of durable goods in just 1 week. That is staggering!
.
$1 billion pumped directly into the economy... not handed out to banks or financial companies, not hoarded into savings accounts, but actually pumped onto the streets. It is fantastic. It is one of the only parts of either Bush's or Obama's stimulus programs that has been successful. At least give credit where it is due!
When the govt overtaxes (as they do) everyone complains. When the govt gives money back in stimulus.... people complain. I think some people just like to complain.

Which country "can successfully use national healthcare" that we cant? There is no such country. Where is it working? NO PLACE! Even in the USA, is Medicare and Medicaid working so well that you want to expand it to 300 million people???? Its not working well and we dont want to expand it!
I find it quite amusing that you want to compare this to "car registration" so let us consider, would you like to see the govt healthcare run like the DMV? Most people would rather go to their dentist than to have to go to the DMV!
They claim it will cost "X" amount over 10 years so what happens when they get "close" to that number? They WILL ration which means you wont get the care you need no matter what! That doesnt happen by private insurance.
Nothing the govt does or has done to "help" ever worked so what makes anyone think this would help. The socialization of this country is what is ruining it.

What has this done?
Let's see, if I didnt like my old car I could go into a dealer and trade it in for a vehicle that gets only 4 MPH more than the one I have now. I dont see the 3500-4500 dollars as it goes to the dealer but the dealer needs to deal with all the paperwork.
I didnt have to work for that 4500 "rebate" either. Well really I did if I pay taxes and I should really make a kiddush in shul for all my friends who also paid for my new car. Gee that's really nice of them!

Uh, I hate to break this to you, but no American has the "right" to anything not explicitly stated in the Constitution.
Last I checked, there was no mention of public schools, public roads, public parks, public libraries, public transportation, public redistribution of wealth in the way of Earned Income Credits, Child Tax Credits, Food Stamps, Medicaid, and a whole host of other programs you take advantage of every day, to be found in the Constitution.
I went to a public college, subsidized completely by the government, without which I would not be a pharmacist today. Did I have a "right" to the $20,000 plus dollars it costs the state and federal governments for my eduction? no, not any more so than I have a "right" to enjoy Central Park (a park that costs the city of NY millions of dollars to maintain) on a nice sunny afternoon.
Government bodies vote on issues not because they are "rights", but because they are lawful and believe them to be in the best interest of their constituents which is perfectly in keeping with the traditions of any democracy.
Stop parroting Rush Limbaugh, and try to think for yourself.

The point wasn't to give you money. That was the added benefit. The point was to get cars off the lots which keeps factories going and keeps people employed. In turn, it keeps the money flowing into the economy.
This was one of the most brilliant pieces of stimulus legislation yet. It is directly pumping money into our manufacturing sector. Anyone who understands anything about economics realizes that this is exactly the right course of action.
Now if only they would do this for electronics and appliances as well. Give people credits to get rid of energy-draining, old appliances and buy newer energy efficient ones. Again, directly pumping money into the economy. Brilliant.
